Windows 10: Can't Access files on hard drive windows 10

I have the following problem.When I reinstall Windows on a computer following a non-booting issue, I normally plug the hard drive into my other computer to backup any required data before wiping it. I then reinstall Windows on the hard drive, and then plug the hard drive back into my computer to copy data back into the right folders. Sounds simple, you would think, and it's what I've been doing for at least the last 10 years until Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 came along to ruin it.Here's the issue, on Windows 8 or above OS's, if I copy data onto a hard drive that have these OSs installed, when I

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Accessing a Hard Drive...

...from a dead laptop.

My girlfriend's laptop recently s**t the bed, and she has a lot of photos she would like to retrieve from it. I used a USB to IDE cable to try, but it's a no go. Her drive has Windows XP Home on it, and my system has Win7 x64. The computer recognizes the drive, but it wants me to initialize it, which I think may format it.

I don't know if it's formatted FAT32 or NTFS. Are there any suggestions on accessing the drive to pull all this data off of it?

You can use Windows search. Just search for *.* on a desired drive. When list is done just arrange them by size LOL.

You can do it via command line as well and make an output text file showing files and their sizes (but without arrangement)
