Windows 10: Can't change brightness or detect second monitor on Windows 10 laptop

After a restart earlier, my Asus Windows 10 Laptop was unable to detect the monitor I have plugged into the HDMI port. The Monitor can detect a signal through the HDMI port as the signal select highlight for that HDMI port, meaning the ports on the monitor and the laptop are working. I tried the cable on other devices, so I know it's working. The display settings on the computer cannot seem to detect the second display and won't output anything to it, but the monitor can detect the signal. I've also tried updating drivers on the graphics cards as well as the primary display, both of which were

To change your Windows 10 monitor brightness, we suggest that you follow the steps below:

• Click the Windows logo; then, search for Control Panel.
• Select Hardware and Sound.
• Choose Power Options.
• On the next screen you should see brightness slider at the bottom of the Control Panel window.

Second monitor not detected

If Windows can't detect your second monitor, it's usually a driver problem. It could be due to your video driver being outdated, incorrect or faulty. It's also possible that your monitor driver is causing the problem.

Since the issue occurred after the latest update, it's possible that the video or monitor drivers require an update. Try looking for the updated version of the drivers on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

If the issue persists, try to roll back the drivers to the last good configuration. To do that, you may follow these steps:

• Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
• Right-click your device driver, select Properties, and browse to the
  Driver tab.
• Press the Roll Back Driver option if available, and Windows 10 will begin the process.

HP Envy Laptop with HP Pavilion second monitor - upgrade to W10 not detecting second monitor

I am suspecting that after I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 that my laptop no longer detects a second display. Second monitor does not detect any signal and goes to sleep.

How do I get my second monitor to be detected by my laptop? I've already tried the following:

1. restart system

2. unplug and replugged

3. changed HDMI cable that connects second monitor to laptop

4. reinstalled NDIVIA drivers and other display drivers so they are apparently up to date.

Not sure what else to do unless if I installed incorrectly?????
