How do I associate file types with non Microsoft programs?

The application I want to use does not show up in the list. in fact a lot of my apps don't show up in the list. the system then suggest going to the app store and apparently forgets it is trying to find an app to associate with the file type.

Set file association for .NEF files

I'm not sure why Photoshop isn't listed, however when you say that when you go to the file associations, Photoshop CS4 is not an option, are you accessing the default file associations through the Settings app, or from the Control Panel?

The reason I ask is because if you access the default file associations through the Settings App, for some strange reason it gives you less options and you only have a limited choice of the apps that it chooses, or to 'Look for an app in the store', which obviously is of no help to you (and surely an oversight on Microsoft's behalf?!?).

If you access the default file associations through the Control Panel, it gives you more options where you can also go to 'More Apps', which will give you a larger list of programs to choose from and also the option to 'Look for another app on this PC', where you can then manually try finding Photoshop in either:

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe (for 64-bit Photoshop)
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe (for 32-bit Photoshop).

Default file associations through the Settings App:

How do I associate file types with non Microsoft programs?

Now that Niranjan has explained how your clock works you still want to know what time it is.

Go back and read all my previous posts. Most of them have little relevance but the following is the significant portion:

    • Installation does set the associations for types that are unassigned but it does not change the association for known types at least in many cases.
    • It does not add the new executable to the list of possibilities that File Explorer displays if you click "Open with...". This is not a good thing so I will submit a Feedback.
    • If you select properties for a file you can select change "Opens with:" which will let you browse for a program and it will then change it for all files of that type.
So this is applicable it those cases where the program you want to use does not show up when you click "Open with..." or in the list that you get when you go to Settings>System>Default apps. So, open File Explorer and find an example of the type of file
you want to open and right click on it. On the menu that pops up choose "Open With>Choose another app" then choose "More Apps". It will give you a list of programs but what it does not do is show a scroll bar but when you move your pointer over the list of
"Apps" the scroll bar will appear. Scroll to the bottom of the list and it will say something like "look for other apps on this computer". Select that and a browser will open. Navigate to the program you want to use and select it and designate that you always
want to use this "app" to open this type of file. Since this is a system wide change you may need to do this in an Administrator account. Maybe that is why it didn't accept your changes, I don't know. The point here is that all programs don't
show up as suggestions even if they are in the "All Apps" list but if they are properly installed and you can find the executable you should be able to assign them to a given file type. I would say the Windows is broken but Microsoft would say you should not
be running legacy or non Microsoft programs.
