Can't change Microsoft Basic Display Driver to my Nvidia

Hey everyone, so for the past 3 hours i've been trying to fix the issue stated in the title. I recently did a system restore and Microsoft changed my display driver to Microsoft Basic Display and I don't know how to change it. I've tried updating in windows because it shows the Nvidia driver I need to update to but whenever I try to update it I get this error:

    nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 - Error 0x80070017

I've also tried to install the drivers needed through GeForce experience but I get errors too..

    I have a Nvidia Gefore 960 GTX.

    Any help is much appreciated

    :)

It may be old fashion, but manually uninstalling and installing graphics drivers is still the most reliable method, imo.

You will need to prevent Windows Updates from installing or reinstalling graphics drivers though.

    - Download your driver of choice from Nvidia:
NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

    - The method below will help prevent Windows doing driver updates .

R/click on the Start button and select Control Panel.

Select System > Advanced system settings.

Click the Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings.

Select the “No, let me choose what to do" option.
    - This may be all that is required, but to be safe also use the Show/Hide tool below (These two options

should not need to be done again when you update drivers in future).

    - After you uninstall the current graphics drivers via Programs and Features, and before you reboot after

uninstalling the Nvidia graphics drivers, run the 'Show/Hide' tool from the article below to prevent

Windows Updates from reinstalling it's driver of choice during the post uninstall reboot.

How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

( Display Driver Uninstaller is a popular alternative for uninstalling graphics drivers, and useful if a driver

install has become corrupt as DDU does a more thorough job of removing files than Programs and Features.

Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 14.1.0.0 )

    - Install the driver you downloaded. When installing the Nvidia drivers select the 'custom' option and

only select the components you use for installation. The minimum install would be the driver and PhysX.

    Reboot....

Short google, this error message is normally for Windows 7, are you sure you downloaded the latest and correct drivers from Nvidia?
    Chipset drivers installed?

    Cheers

Yes I made sure I was installing the correct Nvidia drivers.. Tried everything there. Then I went on to realize that my driver was set to windows 10 basic display which is incorrect. So when i checked windows update and security and noticed the downloadable update for my nvidia drivers I tried installing only to get the error above. I'll link a picture too:

    How about the chipset drivers?
After installation of the chipset drivers (Intel, not Microsoft), make a reboot and use the drivers from Nvidia website

    Cheers

I had a similar issue with my GTX 960 and Intel HD graphics. When the new Nvidia drivers were released, I was unable to update them. As it turns out, the Intel iGPU was still being read as the primary display adapter, and so Windows would throw and error when I ran the Nvidia driver installer (can't put Nvidia drivers on an intel device). To solve the issue, I completely uninstalled ALL (except 3D vision and graphics driver) nvidia components. Then I rebooted my system and downloaded a copy of my BIOS to re-flash (in case there was a device detection problem there). I re-flashed the BIOS and booted into windows, to discover that Intel HD graphics no longer appeared in device manager. Seeing this result, I tried to install the nvidia driver update again, and to great success. The drivers installed, the system rebooted and everything worked exactly as intended.

In short, try re-flashing your BIOS. It should work, but if it doesn't, I don't know what to tell you. As for actually finding your motherboard's BIOS, you'll need to go to your computer, or motherboard's support page and select the latest BIOS version to download. If you have an Asus computer or motherboard the flashing will be easy, otherwise there might be a wizard that will do it for you. If none of these are the case, you'll just have to look it up.
