Can’t change permissions on old hard drive

    Hi everyone,

To get you up to date with my situation, I recently upgraded my PC with a 1TB SSD to boot from and run my most used programs. I am keeping other files on my 4TB HDD, on which I left my old installation of Windows and all files as they were.

I now am running into the issue that I can edit and move files around on the secondary drive without issue, but programs booted from the secondary drive are unable to make changes to it. This is mainly an issue because I want to keep my gaming library on my second disk, which I can move and edit however I want as far as I can tell with normal use, but no games using that disk can write to it in any way, including saving progress made. They do all seem to run from the disk without issue.

I would prefer not to have to format this drive in order to use it properly, and cannot copy over a backup as I don’t have another drive of that capacity to spare. I also cannot boot Windows from this drive because of an issue I had in changing partition sizes corrupting the boot information.

As you can probably tell by now, I know just enough about computers to break them, but not enough to fix the damage I cause, so any assistance you can offer would be very appreciated. Thank you for your help.

    :)

Change permission to internal hard drive and now cannot access it.

    Windows 10

I changed the permission to a second internal hard drive. My exact steps:

    1. right click hard drive

    2. properties

    3. security tab

    4. Selected Users from the "group or user names:"

    5. Selected deny for "read and execute", "list folder contents", and "read" under "permissions for users"

    6. clicked ok

Now I do not have access to the hard drive as administrator or the guest account.

When checking the security properties in an effort to change my mistakes, I see the following.

"you must have read permissions to view the properties of this object"

    clicking advance says

"you must have read permissions to view the properties of this object. click continue to attempt the operations with administrative permissions"

    clicking continue says

"you do not have permission to view this objects security properties, even as an administrative user. To try to take ownership of the object, which includes permission to view its properties, click change above"

I don't want to cause anymore damage, if anyone can help me, it would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

hard drive full, but can<t find the item to erase

Windows 10 has the option to change the storage location. We suggest that you change the storage location so you can still use your hard drive instead of using the SSD. Kindly follow the steps below on how to change the storage location:

    • On the Search bar, type in storage and select the top most result.
    • On the Storage screen, change the location of each options to your desired hard drive. The files will now be saved on the specific hard drive.

Permission issue, shared drive Windows 10.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We can understand your concern. However, we would need some more information regarding the issue.

    1. May I know the exact error message?
    2. Have you shared all hard drives or any particular folder within the particular hard drive?

Since you have mentioned that you are getting error related to permission issue, please refer to the troubleshooting steps provided by “Azee N” dated June 2nd 2010 on
Providing permission to drive and try
    providing permission to the drive.

If the issue still persists, we would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below to re-map the drive.

    1. Disconnect the drive by right click on the drive and select disconnect (if the drive is mapped).
    2. Then re-map the drive by referring to Map a network drive
and check if it resolves the issue.

    Regards,
