Windows 10: can't change Windows 10 user name - please help

I tried to search before posting, but didn't see anything that helped. Here is the situation:

I have three computers with Windows 10 Pro. All three are signed into Windows using my Microsoft account (as opposed to local accounts).

Computer #1 uses the name associated with my Microsoft account - let's say John Smith.

Computers #2 and #3 use an "account" name - let's say JSMITH.

I have tried changing the sign-in name on Computer #1 to JSMITH, but it will not let me. I have not been able to change the name in any of the normal Windows 10 User Settings. All of the research I have done is telling me that I have to change my name on my Microsoft account.

To be clear - my preferred sign-in is to use the single word "nick name" (JSMITH) instead of my Microsoft account name (John Smith).

Is there a way to do what I want to do - without changing the name on my Microsoft account? And if not, why are computers #2 and #3 able to use just the nick name without any problem?

  netplwiz and click on Ok.
• On the Users tab, click on Properties to change the user name and then click on

Steps: To determine the user account type:

  Login to any account.
  
• 
  Press Windows key+X.
  
• 
  Click on Control Panel.

  Click on User accounts.
  
• 
  Your user account will show and below that it will show your local account or admin account.
  
• 
  Once you know about the account type.
  
• 
  You can go to user account and change the name.
  
• 
  Press Windows key+R.
  
• 
  Type netplwiz and press enter.
  
• 
  Select the account and click on properties.
  
• 
  Change the user name and click on apply and then ok and one more time click on ok on the main screen.
