Can't connect PC's on LAN using NetBIOS \\[COMPUTERNAME]

I have two Windows PC's on a LAN. They both show up in the Windows Explorer network tree but cannot connect to each other using \\[COMPUTERNAME].

I have network discovery sharing turned on. Both clean installs of Windows 10. Same Microsoft Account. The correct sharing services are running. NetBIOS is enabled. Each PC can seeitself in the tree and display its own shared folders. The PC's connect to each other in Windows Explorer just fine using \\[IP address]. <nbtstat> on each PC shows the NetBIOS tables are correct and they can see each other's tables.

However, trying to connect one PC to the other with the NetBIOS name results in the "Enter network credentials" window showing my Microsoft Account e-mail address, saying "The user name or password is incorrect." When I try to enter the password again, same result.

Even more strange, is the problem is usually there, but sometimes I can connect.

    Any ideas?

    :)

    Good LAN party games?

Most of my suggestions have already been listed.

However, I found Swat4 to actually be a pretty fun LAN game, especially at smaller LAN parties.

Netbios and resolving local DNS names

Yes. I was only suggesting that you to edit the LMHosts file rather than the Hosts file.
