Can't Connect to Internet via Ethernet Now on Laptop - Used to Work

    Hi,

Don't know what changed, but now when I try to connect to internet on my tiny GPD WIN laptop running Win 10, I get the yellow triangle on the network icon in taskbar and message 'identifying....No internet access'.

I've checked network connection and cable on another laptop and connection works OK.

Checked Device Manager and everything looks OK.

[UPDATE] Just did the Windows Network Troubleshooter.....
Both WiFi and Ethernet have message:

Any suggestions how to get ethernet working again?

    Thank you!

    Mark

    :)

    Mobile Hotspot

I have used my iphone to connect my laptop to the internet before, and I found it was much faster when I connected via usb and my laptop recognized it as a ethernet. Now with the June update, ethernet connection does not show up as an option, only through
wi-fi. Any suggestions on how to get it to find the ethernet connection? I've tried troubleshooting my ethernet connectivity, but came up with nothing, and my ethernet connection at my home router works fine.

  3. Wi-Fi problems with internal network

My installation consists of the following:

Desktop computer connected to internet router via an Ethernet cable.

Laptop connected to internet router via Wi-Fi using one of two methods:

Using the Wi-Fi broadcast from the internet router itself

Using the Wi-Fi broadcast from a dLan AV wireless which is connected to the original internet router via an Ethernet cable.

The dLan installation is a powerline unit with the sender plugged into the room where the internet router is based and the receiver/Ethernet/Wi-Fi unit plugged into a socket in the room where the laptop is used.

My backup drive is a Seagate GoFlex Home unit which is connected to the internet router via an Ethernet cable.

When my old laptop was working on Windows 7 I was able to run back up via either of my two Wi-Fi options. My new Windows 10 (home) laptop can be connected to the back up drive if I connect an Ethernet cable between the laptop and the dLan AV receiver in
the room however if I try to connect via either of the two Wi-Fi options I cannot find the backup drive nor can I create a network in order to add it.

I hope that this clarifies the problem.

    Regards,

Did you check your IP settings?

Go to Network and sharing center (right click on network ico in taskbar and select ...) and quick check on "Ethernet" (if connected).
Then click on details - look if network IP is correct.
If anything is out of order, click on "Properties" and verify that IPv4 (or IPv6) shows Obtain IP address automatically. If that doesn't work, select one manually.

Thank you for your help and input!

    Checked things as you suggested.

In 'Details', info shown looks OK as far as I can tell....'DHCP Enabled Yes' and shows IPv4 DNS Servers and IPv4 WINS Servers addresses, 'NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled Yes', although IPv4 Default Gateway has no address shown.

In 'Properties', IPv4 shows 'Obtain IP address automatically' as well as for IPv6.

I didn't mention that I've been trying to connect at my work office and ethernet network there.

I will take my little laptop home and see if I can connect to my home ethernet network. If it works at home, then I will try selecting IP address manually as you suggest.

I thought you were connecting to NAS on your local network. If you are connecting from WAN (outside network), check the manuals for system. Every system have a bit different approach.
    Please disregard this..

I assume it is a local network of some kind. I have two separate LAN ports in my office. Use one for my work laptop and other for my own laptop occasionally. Was working OK before. All of a sudden it stopped working on this laptop. As mentioned, I tried another laptop (running Linux...) and it connected OK, no problem.

Can you check lan settings on the other laptop?

and resetting IP could help (type ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew at command prompt)

Edit: and please disregard my previous post... I've mixed two topics *Redface - late here, have to take some sleep.

Sometimes disabling and re-enabling network adapter can help. Also restart computer (if it wasn't for a long time)

    Any success ArchiMark ?
That empty default gateway isn't good. You could insert your default gateway manually. Usually is the same number as yours, just with 1 as the last one (check on other laptop). While at it, set your IP address manually (just put in the same numbers as you have now).

    Thanks again for your help!

Left work for the day. But took my little GPD WIN home with me to try on my home network.

It connects OK to ethernet network here with no problem. Did not need to do anything.

So, that is good sign that laptop/network hardware is OK.

Now, need to figure out on Monday what is wrong at the office network. Will try your latest suggestions there on Monday.

    Thank you.

    OK, somethings to mention....
There is a big difference if you are part of larger network at your office, or you have your own business and your network.

If you are connected to large network, don't do any repairs on your own. Ask for network administrator and let him assist you. (to be on a safe side...)
If your office network is like small business network and employees are also admins *Smile then:
    - check if problem is already fixed (could be provider problem)
    - reset router (power off, wait half a minute and power back on) and check if problem is fixed
    - manually set IP address (best in my opinion is to copy one of the working computer settings - you checked it yesterday - and manually set address to a hundred off - i.e. instead of 192.168.1.105 set it to 192.168.1.205) fill every settings including gateway and DNS

I guess your cable is OK, since you have problem with wireless too. Just in case, check if cable is inserted into router or switch.

If non of the above would help, you'll have to access you router settings...

Thank you for your latest input. Very much appreciate it!

Yes, connected to a very large network and it is very secure for variety of reasons. By large I mean many different locations across multiple states in US.

I do have a group of IT people that work in office space not far from where I am located. Was hoping to avoid discussing things with them if possible, as they probably are not too happy with my using the network at times with my own laptop.

Just strange that this problem started now after it was OK for a long time. Maybe IT changed some security settings?

Exactly what comes to mind when you said no gateway was filled in... *Wink and why I put that there in bold *Smile It is not only restricting policy, you know. It could be a point of major risk involved...

Just to be clear.. I'm not an IT professional...

  14. Its possible that they could be setting a restricting policy. It may be set up to reject a connection to any device with an unrecognized MAC address which would by why the router or DHCP server isnt handing an address out to your laptop. The only way to correct this would be to contact a network admin and see if they can add your device to the recognized list or would reject it all together. If they have that kind of security in place, there is probably a good reason for it and they wouldnt allow you to bring your own device.

Where I work we have two seperate wireless networks. We have one for office and IT personnel to connect to, then we have a guest network that doesnt have any access to the network resources that are provided to the main network. Personal devices are not to be connected to the main network for security reasons. Maybe the company you work for has something similar.

The only way to solve this issue is to contact your network administrator, prove to them that it is essential to the business to allow your system to access the companies private network, they will then set up access for you.

I would be careful though as un-sanctioned use of company resources can often be classed as a serious breech of company rules and I have known of occasions where it has led to instant dismissal of staff members doing so in secure premises
