Can't connect two PCs using Ethernet cable any more - Win 10 & Win 7

This used to be a simple network trick -> connect two Windows PCs using network cable, go into adapter settings -> IPv4 -> set one IP to 10.0.0.1 and the other 10.0.0.2, then you can easily see the other computer and copy/move files.

Not when I upgraded one PC to Windows 10 (can't upgrade the other one yet, as it's work machine). Tried the above, can't see the other Windows. Symptoms include:
    - Windows 10 PC adapter status shows a lot of incoming traffic but outgoing traffic stays 0 bytes.
    - tried to edit group policy for default location for unidentified network (which is the case on both PCs) to be Private so I could share files
    - For "Private" networks, the network discovery is set to ON.

    Any ideas?

    :)

Qualcomm Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) is using just 100 Mbit in Win 10

Since updating from Win 7 to Win 10 my Qualcomm Atheros AR8152 Ethernet Controller is just working in with 100 Mbit, not a Gigabyte anymore. I updated the driver but I was just able to find a driver for Win 8. Other computers with Win 7 are woking at
the same ethernet cable. How can I use my gigabyte connection? Or do I have to downgrade back to Win 7?

You cannot connect two computers together using a normal network cable. Normal network cables are wired so that they are straight pass through. You need what's called a crossover cable, as these connect the transmit from one computer to the receive on the other.

These cables are fairly hard to find, so it's usually much easier to simply get a cheap network switch.

Modern network adapters don't require crossover cables -- they can accept normal network cables and mine did work fine before the Windows 10 upgrade.

So I'd like to find out what's changed in Windows 10 network settings and how it does things differently. Thanks.

I realize that it's been a year, but I was curious if you had any luck resolving this issue.

You can try sharing your your Wi-Fi internet using your ethernet nic.
This solved the problem for me.
This way you don't even have to fill in the IP addresses in each computer as the computer you have set to share your internet also acts as a DHCP server(which is cool).
Also you don't need to have internet connected, just enable Internet Connection Sharing of any other network using ethernet.
