    Can't Degragment (Optimize) SYSTEM


    Hello - My computer is running extremely slow so I opened Defragment and Optimize Drives. The drive titled "SYSTEM" is 100% fragmented. All three other drives - OS (C*Smile , HP Recovery (D*Smile , and \\?\volume... are all 0% fragmented.

    When I click "Optimize" on the 100% fragmented "SYSTEM" Drive it scans for like .5 seconds and then just goes back to saying "Needs optimization (100% fragmented).

    Any suggestions on how to defrag it?

    Defrag Windows 10

    That is fine at not having 100% degragment but mine states 39% and needs to be optimized. When I run it, it always comes back to the same thing. So how to I fix this? My computer is running slow because it needs this done but it is not doing its job.

    Defrag and BSOD

    I get BSOD whenever "Defragment and Optimize Drives" tries to run. It also happens when my laptop is plugged in and idle for about 4 minutes which I assume is when it tries to launch Defrag. Is there a fix? How can I disable degrag launch and do I
    need it since my laptop has an SSD?

    Welcome to the forum. Are you referring to the system reserved small drive? If so leave it alone its the boot drive and any fragmentation will make very little difference

    If Windows 10 will not let you Optimize the drive, then it is not needed. Windows 10 handles hard drive management a lot better than the older version of Windows.

    Also, there's one or two small partitions, usually unlettered, that shouldn't be messed with and most likely Windows won't do anything with them.

    It says "Needs optimization (100% fragmented)" but won't let me optimize.

    The system partition cannot be done, because it is a partition that is only seen by Windows. It will not affect performance.

    Take the SYSTEM and HP_RECOVERY drives off the Defrag list.
    Go to the change settings link > Choose.
    They are fixed content system stuff, no point in a Defrag, doubt if Windows defrag would do anything anyway.

    It's not the cause of your slow ups, go to the Task Manager in the first instance to suss out some more.
