Windows 10: Can't delete files due to mysterious/non existent user having administration rights. User...

Hi,


I copied some files into another folder and later had to re-set Windows. Somehow, a mysterious and non-existent user has been given control over these folders.


I have tried MakeOwnershipPro, which allowed me to delete nearly all of the files, but some still remain.


I enabled and then logged in as the system Administrator but this didn't work either.


The mysterious administrator name is the same as the computer name. I tried to setup a new user using that name so that I could delete the files, but Windows won't let me setup a user which is the same as the computer name.


I could change the computer name and then setup a user under the mysterious user name but I don't know the implications of changing the computer name.


I don't know what else to do or to try.


Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Suggest you to follow the below mentioned steps and check if they help:

* Press Windows Key + R, type netplwiz

* Click and highlight the User profile, which you want to make administrator

* Click on Properties, then select the Group Membership tab

* Select the Administrator, Click apply/ok

If you're not able to do this using current user account, then try to enable the built in Administrator account through command prompt and try the same.

  Press CTRL+Shift+ESC to open Task Manager.
  
• 
  Click File > Run New Task
  
• 
  Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
  
• 
  Type CMD
  
• 
  Type or copy/paste the following commands at the CMD prompt:
  

net user administrator /active:yes

Removing a "hidden" user and user files

Thanks for your patience. I was able with "Net User" to remove the left over user. It no longer appears when I invoke Net User.

Now for the user's folder which remains behind. After performing the series of steps that you suggested, I attempted to delete this folder. The result again was an error message about permission


"Administrators" appears on the list in the list of advanced security.

 

I am not the "default" user


In making a new user account, manually copy the files and then deleting the existing account sounds easy enough
but is it going to cause me administrator problems? I am only user pf computer and have myself set up as local administrator and no one else is listed or in Control panel shows up beside by real first name (non-microsoft e-mail) The mysterious other user only shows up when I see a file path no matter what drive.
