  1. Can't enable Over Provisioning on Samsung SSD

It seems that I can't enable Over Provisioning on my Samsung 500GB EVO.

I got W10 x64 along with Ubuntu installed. I shrinked 50GB (10%of the SSD) from the partition and I still can't get this thing enabled.

  2. Very slow boot time with Windows 10 Pro on SSD

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: WINDOWS 10 UPGRADE DELETES OVER-PROVISIONING ON SSD!

After upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 I experienced the same slow boot issues. This wasn't anything to do with what was happening IN Windows -- the delay was happening before Windows started, and continued after I rolled back to 8.1 (my Lenovo X220
was not fully compatible). I realized that it must be something that had changed on my SSD and I finally found out what it is:

The Windows 10 upgrade process deleted the over-provisioning space on my SSDs!! I had set up 10% for over-provisioning with Samsung Magician for both my Samsung SSDs and after the upgrade it was gone from both drives. After re-applying 10%
over-provisioning with Samsung Magician everything returned to normal after around 24 hours. It wasn't immediate, probably because the drive firmware needed time to get its references set up again.

If you have a Samsung SSD you just need to reactivate over-provisioning with the Samsung Magician utility. If you have a different brand you will need to re-activate it using the method you used to set it up in the first place. Make sure you have a backup,
because any changes to hard disk structure are potentially dangerous.

Info: Over-provisioning space is free space that an SSD needs to use to replace bad sectors. When sectors go bad they are marked as bad and the firmware uses sectors from the over-provisioning space instead.

  3. Bootmgr corrupt

I have been trying some tools on my failing Seagate 1TB hard disk. There are a few programs designed to read and report on the S.M.A.R.T. analysis of drives, which is built-in to most drives. There are some SMART tests, such as a Short Disk Test that are
non-destructive and should display what your SSD has recorded during it's history, such as how long it has run, number of power-ups and any bad block errors. It would be good to see if SMART is reporting that your SSD is failing, or if SMART was enabled.
Here is a simple SMART reader from Nirsoft.

I wondered about something called over-provisioning, where a portion (at least 10%) of an SSD is left un-partitioned, but apparently Sandisk builds this into their drives in a way that is outside the user's control. My Samsung SSD has software that does
this by shrinking the last partition by 10% of the disk capacity and it advises the user to do this manually or with their software. Samsung says over-provisioning also makes for longer SSD life. Here is an article discussing the idea of user-implemented
over-provisioning for SSDs. I have always kept 10% of my 128GB Samsung SSD with 10% un-partitioned.

"The minimum amount of over-provisioning for an SSD is set at the factory, but users can allocate more space for better performance."

Over provisioning just makes unallocated space, so you're set any how.
But I suspect it's because of Ubuntu using ext.3 or ext.4 file system and Magician is working inside of Windows with NTFS.

  7. It seems that it should be specifically at the end of the space

On an SSD it doesn't matter physically.
Actually the SSDs controller lies to the OS as to where data is stored, as there is no " spinning disk", only NAND chips organized in cells & blocks all with the exact seek time.

Samsung Magician 4.9.7 Over Provisioning: I did not like Samsung Magician 5.0 so I uninstalled it completely and installed Magician 4.9.7 I like this older version, more "options", easy to work with. On one page they asked if I want OVER PROVISIONING, I chose "Set OP", it created a 47.69 GB "unallocated" partition....
