Hi all,I know similar questions to this have been asked before, but I have tried just about everything and am at a loss. I went to install some new hard drives in my system today, I wanted to replace some old small SSD's that I had already made backups of anything important from.Realized the computer would not start boot-loop at the bios check screen once I removed one of those SSD's, but started right up fine when I put it back in. This seemed strange to me as it was NOT my C boot drive.Looking at disk management you can see the problem, my NVMe 465gb Disk 1 drive houses my boot volume C

Extending system reserved partition gone wrong

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is William. I'm a Windows technical expert. I'll be happy to help you out today.

Create a Windows 10 boot media using this MS guide:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Afterwards, boot from the USB media. At the Windows install setup select the Repair option > System Recovery Options > Command prompt. From here you can use Diskpart to try to recover the system reserved partition. I believe the appropriate commands would be:

    diskpart

list partition and note the drive letter for your system disk (it may not be CCan't Fix Wrong Active Drive - Boot drive on different disk than system reserved... :)

Select x where x is the Windows system drive

active to make the drive active.

Or refer to this iink for more for additional steps:

Alternatively, you can use the same tool you used to bork the system reserved partition (if you have the proversion):

  3. Installed a new drive, now my system tries to boot from the wrong drive

This is why it's always best to wipe an OS drive of all partitions, and then if necessary of boot code using DIskpart Clean Command, so they don't interfere.

Make sure the SSD is set first to boot in BIOS setup under Boot Priority Order.

Go into Disk Mgmt and delete the System Reserved partition on the hard drive. If it fails then Type CMD in Start Search, right click result to Run as Admin. Then run these commands to delete it:

    https://techjourney.net/delete-and-remove-prote...

If the above fails to delete hard drive System Reserved, in Command Box type each command followed by the Enter key:

    DISKPART

    LIST DISK

SEL DISK 0 (confirm from list this is the number of HDD)

    LIST PART

SEL PART 1 (confirm from list this is the partition number)

    INACTIVE

    EXIT

Now restart PC to see if it still interferes.

If so swap the data cables on the drives and then confirm the SSD is set first to boot and stays that way as DISK0.

Can't Fix Wrong Active Drive - Boot drive on different disk than system reserved...

Moving System Reserved partition to a different drive | [image]

I currently have one drive that contains a System Reserved partition (which includes the boot files). The status is System, Active, Primary Partition.

I have another drive with the C: partition. The status is Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.

I've been told that if I remove the disk (it's a bit flaky) with the System Reserved partition, I won't be able to boot up. If this is true, is it possible to transfer that partition to another drive? If so, does it have to be at the start of the drive?

Alternatively, can I make the C: partition include System status?
