Windows 10: Can't get Gmail to work in Windows 10 mail app

I'm trying to get my dad's Gmail account on Windows 10 native mail app. I click 'add account', select 'google', enter his email, password and select a display name. Then the app just returns to the same 'Welcome to mail' screen pictured below and I can't access email. If I try and reenter the information it just says 'account already added' and takes me back to this screen.

The first time I tried to add the account this Gmail blocked it (got an email saying 'sign in attempt blocked), I've read loads of forums and lots say to go to the Mail app settings and remove the account and try again but I cannot find the account settings anywhere - there's no toolbar and no settings icon, am I being daft? It's exactly as pictured below (and if I access the basic app settings by right-clicking the Mail icon in windows toolbar it just has default apps and permissions settings, no accounts ones)

Things I've tried:

• Resetting Mail app
• Uninstalling and reinstalling Mail app
• Turning on IMAP in Gmail
• Setting Gmail to permit 'less secure apps'

Please help! Thank you.

Potential Solutions

Based on some quick research there may be two options that may help resolve this. . .

1. Enable the 2-Step Verification functionality and security feature with your Gmail account and then use the 2-Step Verification to verify and trust the Windows Mail app to have access to your Gmail account
   
2. Enable and use the Less Secure Apps functionality by turning that ON and using your usual Gmail account password with the Windows Mail app to authenticate

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it.

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

• Open powershell as administrator
• Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
• Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)
