Can't get Media Creation Tool to choose an external drive -- "Windows Needs More Space"...

I go through "this will take a moment" I accept the terms and then wait while it "this willl take a moment" to load and then get this screen with no option to select a usb or an external drive with 1 tb of free space. This is really frustrating as I found someone with the same issue from 2015 with no solution what so ever with a further post from 2017 in the thread still no help from support they just locked the thread. This is supposed to be an easy tool to download windows to a usb or disk image why would it select C: on default with no option to change.

    :)

Can't get Media Creation Tool to choose an external drive -- "Windows Needs More Space" Windows 10

I already have Windows 10 but wanted to install the latest November build using the Media Creation tool..........

When I try to install Windows 10 on a "C" Drive with low amount of capacity I get a "Windows needs more space" message. It gives me the option of "Choose another drive or attach an external drive with10.0 GB Available".

When I install a USB Drive with more than 10 GB or space OR and SD Card with more than 10 GB of Space and click "Refresh" the tool does not acknowledge I have installed the memory it requested. It says I need additional Space on the C Drive (But I though
that is why we use the "Media Creation Tool" in the first place, so you don't have free up the C Drive.)

That is my question, what am I doing wrong?

If my version of Windows allows me to move apps from one drive to another, I could work it, but to take off all my programs to install a build update is silly.

  3. Can't get Media Creation Tool to choose an external drive -- "Windows Needs More Space" Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Community, I understand your concern and we will try our best to help you resolve your issue.

Before we proceed, I would like you to provide the information stated below:

    1. How much space do you have in your c: drive?

    2. Are you trying to install the OS in an external drive?

I would like to inform you that, for Windows 10 you will require to have 16GB and above space for 32bit and 20GB and above for 64bit. This is applicable if you want to install Windows 10 in your computer/external drive.

Media Creation tool helps the user to download a digital format of the ISO. The size of this file will be smaller compared to when the ISO is installed. If you want to install Windows 10 in an external drive, you will have to perform installation during
which you will receive the option to choose the location for installation.

I would also like to inform you that installing the new build will not make any changes to your system, provided that you do not perform Clean Install.

    Hope this information helps.

Media Creation Tool is not working?

I'm trying to download the latest Windows 10 update (Version 1709), but my computer doesn't have enough space. Because of this, I am using an external hard drive to download the update, which has plenty of space. But for some reason, every time I try to
use Media Creation it always says "8GB of free disk space needed on (CCan't get Media Creation Tool to choose an external drive -- "Windows Needs More Space"... :)", rather than giving me an option to select my external disk (even though I selected the "Create installation media for another PC" option and my computer detects the disk). Is there
a step I'm missing? Why won't Media Creation allow me to select my external disk for the update?
