Can't get regedit to save changes [ User Shell folders ]

For months I have had an issue with my start folder that also caused issues installing software
finally managed to fix it and it was located at

    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    what it was:
    Startup REG SZ _

    changing it to :
Startup REG EXPAND SZ %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startupfixed all my issues

temporarily but it resets back to Startup REG SZ _ after reboot and Idk how to get it to stick

    Any help?

    :)

Changed Video Personal Folder to User Folder Location cannot move back

    Michael,

I have never heard of this going wrong before. I think trying to change the entry in both
User shell folders and Shell folders might have caused them to fight each other with unknown results, but I am just speculating. I think changing it in just
User shell folders avoids such a clash.

What does your equivalent to my screenshot above now show? Please could you capture the same diagram showing

    • the HKey_Current-user key entry in the status bar [at the bottom],
    • the User shell folders key on the left
    • the My video entry itself [showing both its name & its path].
[Additional - Given the problems, perhaps you could also capture the equivalent diagram for the Shell folders as well]

    Denis

Change registry values of user shell folders: Some folders are missing in registry (contacts, searches, and savedgames)

They have slightly different effects but I never took the time to explore the details. You would need to do a Google search.

    I found this:

Registry: differences between Shell Folders and User Shell Folders? Solved - Windows 7 Help

The entries in this subkey can appear in both the Shell Folders subkey and the User Shell Folders and in both HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The entries that appear in user User Shell Folders
take precedence over those in Shell Folders. The entries that appear in HKEY_CURRENT_USER take precedence over those in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. \Shell Folders exists for backwards compatibility apparently.

Can't get regedit to save changes [ User Shell folders ]

    User folders

Hi Voytek, don;t worry about editing the Registry I will walk you through each step and I will not put you wrong . . .

For the moment, so I can work out what has happened

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor

    Navigate to this Key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Then please provide a screenshot of that Registry Editor window like the one below, so I can see the actual location of each folder . . .
