Windows 10: Can't get rid of public IP address assigned by VPN

I recently installed NordVPN on my computers. When I have VPN turned on, speedtest.net accurately reports the VPN-assigned public IP address, ISP, and server location. Until yesterday, when I turned NordVPN off, it accurately reported my true ISP, the IP address assigned by my ISP, and server location.
On one computer, even with NordVPN turned off, the computer continues to report an IP address that I believe was assigned by NordVPN. It shows the server location that NordVPN had used, and the ISP associated with that NordVPN address. I've rebooted multiple times, rebooted my router, uninstalled NordVPN and rebooted again, but no matter what I do, I continue to get the IP address I got from NordVPN.
All of the other computers on my home network report the public IP address assigned by my ISP (US Internet). But this one desktop continues to report the one from NordVPN. And, the performance of my network connection on this computer is slowed down, as it is most of the time when I use VPN.
Any thoughts on how to get my computer back to connecting directly to my ISP and using the ISP-assigned IP address would be much appreciated.

That will only show the IP address of the last proxy/gateway server you go through. In the case of mobile phones, this is usually the network operator's gateway server address, not the IP address actually assigned to the device (and often the networks assign
private IP addresses instead of public).

You can probably tunnel into a VPN over your operator's packet data service, but your phone can't have an IP address of your home network if it isn't in your home network.

For starters, Home LANs are usually set up in 192.168.0.0/16, which is non-routeable anyway (see RFC1918 and RFC3330).

Secondly, when you connect to your provider's packet data service you are assigned an IP address by your provider. If you're on T-Mobile like I am it'll be somewhere in 10.0.0.0/8, which is also non-routeable for the same reasons. You then go through a proxy
provided by the network and you are seen by other networks as the public IP address of that proxy.

Speedtest.net really isn't the best way to test your current IP address being sent to the world. Use a website like this one to test your non-VPN and VPN IPs.

Thank you for the reply! Those are great links to know about. When I use the two links you sent, they also report the same IP address that speedtest.net reports, which shows the IP address, ISP, and server location that was assigned by the VPN. This is different than the IP address reported using those test on any other computer on my network. I've attached two screen snips, one showing the VPN-assigned values, the other the non-VPN assigned values. All computers except one show the non-VPN assigned values. The non-VPN assigned values are the ones associated with an IP address of 216.17.3.138.

Sounds like a Proxy could be stuck. Download Speccy and when it finishes, poste the URL of your results in a post.

 

The URL reported by Speccy is 72.50.192.56. This is the same one now reported on other computers as well (I rebooted the modem and router, so these don't match the ones in the earlier post, but these are the correct ones.) I've also found that it is only on Chrome that I'm getting the wrong results—IE and Firefox give me the same IP address as Speccy. But the network performance continues to be problematic—e.g., speed is slower and when I go to Airline Tickets & Flights: Book Direct with Delta Air Lines - Official Site, it says this site can't be accessed by this server. The problems only occur on the computer with the problem.

 

We need you to post the URL, not for you to state what it showed and repeating something that we already know from what you posted before. We need the URL from Speccy, so that we can see what is going on with your computer.

Tom can you paste the output from MiniToolbox. MiniToolBox Download Check Report IE & FF Proxy, List Hosts, List IP Config, Winsock. Of course with no way to physically seeing the logs from NordVPN, it kind of screws us.

It does look like OpenVPN is the culprit. Look for this in Speccy:

I forgot to tell you that posting the text from the logs mangles everything. It is one of those times when you can post the file from the output. If you look at the output from Speccy, you are still running OpenVPN as I posted after I gave the info on Farbar's minitoolbox.

Yes, I saw what you referred to in the Speccy output. I also saw that OpenVPN is associated with Anonymizer VPN, which I had on my computer before NordVPN. I'm not sure how to use that information—if you were asking me to do something, or just pointing it out.

NordVPN/OpenVPN is still on the system. Have you tried to show hidden devices in Device Manager, or gone into the Registry to look for NordVPN by the Find function to get rid of it, same as OpenVPN. The only way at times to rid a system of junk that will not go away, is by having to go to a System Restore point way past when you installed NordVPN, or just do a clean install. Thanks so much for your patience. I went into Device Manager and removed both of the VPN adapters. The problem remained. Then I saw that the NordVPN extension was still sitting in the Chrome toolbar. When I removed the extension all was right. Problem solved, lessons learned.
