Can't get rid of wasteful partition at start of disk

    Hello,

My hard disk has 3 partitions, in the following order on the disk:

    1. E drive, that was once upon a time a manufacturer recovery drive, now useless 15GB

    2. C drive, main drive 915GB

    3. Windows recovery drive 1GB

I bought a new disk to replace this disk.

I used Macrium Reflect to clone partitions 2 and 3 to it.

So, the new disk ended up having these partitions:

    1. Empty, unused partition 15GB

    2. C drive, main drive 915GB - clone of 2 above

    3. Windows recovery drive 1GB - clone of 3 above

Which, functionally, was fine - it booted.

However, I want to get rid of that empty partition, and include the space in the main partition.

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to merge partition 1 into partition 2.

This worked in the sense that the main partition now started at the beginning of the disk, and includes the space from both 1 and 2 above.

However, when I then tried to boot from this, Windows did a "recovery" of the disk, and basically undid the repartitioning that I did - it re-created the partitioning shown above - it re-created the unused partition at the front, and shrank the main partition back to its original size.

I did this twice, with the same result.

How can I extend partition 2 back into the space of partition 1, without Windows wanting to undo this when I boot from the disk?

    Thanks!

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

  3. Disk management console view is not up-to-date

i dont know how to fix your disk management, but i can fix your partition problems...

open up Command Prompt with admin rights. (Right click, run as admin)

    enter in
    DISKPART
    list disk

then find the Disk number for your Raid array... lets call it number 7 ( you can tell what disk is what by the total size)
    type in

    Select Disk 7
List Partition (will give you a list of all the partitions..)
Select Partition 1 (im assuming you only have 1 partition on Disk 7) repeat this step if you have more partitions.
    ASSIGN

that should get the array up and running ready to use.

    EDITED.

    any problems, post back ^^

  4. Can't get rid of wasteful partition at start of disk

    Hard disk partitioning

Step 1: Connect the external drive and make sure it is powered on.

Step 2: press Windows key + X then click Disk Management

Step 3: You will see the external drive listed in Disk Managment.

Right click each partition, starting from the extreme right, then click Delete.

You should only see one unallocated drive

After all are deleted, right click it then click Format

    This will start a wizard

Choose NTFS for the file system then label it then click Next to begin the format.
