Windows 10: Can't install W10 from flash disk

Just d/l-ed W10 to a USB thumb drive via the MediaCreationTool2004.exe

Comp Mgmt tells me it's FAT32

It looks like this:





When I power on the computer I am trying to install to, I see the thumb drive flash a few times. But I can't boot from it; I get:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in the device and select a key

The MB is 10 yrs old. I took a look at the BIOS and all of the USB options are enabled, incl Legacy USB

However, the thumb drive is not listed in the Boot Device Priority. I assume this is the problem.

I reformatted the thumb drive to be NTFS, but when doing the d/l, the W10 tool reformats it to FAT32.

This thumb drive is seen by my W7 machine, and also by my W10 laptop.

Ideas?

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

Steam does not install from disk?!?!

no you're doing steps 1 and 2 wrong. steam creates the directory, you stop steam and then you install the game from the disk to that directory.

also steam must be off, not in offline mode but off, aka no steam services in the task manager when you install the game.

 

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
