Windows 10: Can't keep settings and apps when upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro to 10

I think the question says it all. I'm trying to upgrade a friend's PC running Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10, using the Media Creation Tool. I've tried both the 'Upgrade this PC now' and 'Create installation media' options. I've also tried with a downloaded ISO from an earlier version (1909) of Windows 10. In every case it goes all right until I get to the 'Choose what to keep' window, where the 'Keep personal files and apps' option is greyed out and a message at the bottom of the window states 'Your files, apps and settings can't be kept because you're installing an edition of Windows that's different from the one you're currently using.' That last message really doesn't make sense in the context where I have chosen 'Upgrade this PC now'.

Following various suggestions I found, I've disabled and removed an anti-virus. I installed all available upgrades. Makes no difference.

For what it's worth, when I try 'Get more features with a new edition of Windows' from the System page in the Control Panel I get a window that says 'You can't add features to this edition of Windows'.

Losing apps and settings really isn't an option. Does this mean my friend is stuck with Windows 8.1 or can anyone suggest a way around this?

Windows 10 Pro or Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7 Pro ?


Just replaced motherboard on my old Dell D830 that I had upgraded to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro last August.

Went through steps on setting up new MOBO and it is up/working just fine.

I happened to run Belarc Advisor just to get a snapshot of data for the file. What is interesting is that Belarc indicates the O/S is Windows 8 Pro (build 9200).

I looked at another recent thread here at TenForums and also took some of the steps suggested and figured that maybe I needed to install or re-install Windows 10. I checked the Update/Security/Activation tab and it indicates that Windows 10 Pro is installed, activated with a digital entitlement.

So ... why does Belarc seem to see only Windows 8 Pro? Maybe because of the "maturity" of the D830? I know that Dell has disclaimers at their site that says the D830 has not been certified for Windows 10.

So, it is working, but the data from Belarc just has me scratching my head.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

 

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:

• Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
• Try different keyboard or mouse.
• Restart computer, repeatedly.
• Google for related issues.
• Update Bios, because why not.
• Create boot media and revert to windows 7.

The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.
