Windows 10: Can’t login or reset pc from boot

A coworker purchased a new computer from Costco back in November 2023. HP Pavillion, Model: 15-eg3055cl.The computer was not set up until Jan 2025. Upon setting up the computer, there were issues forming a Microsoft account and user account. The supposed password to get into the computer does not work. We are now unable to get into the computer at all. I shift restarted the computer to try to reset it, but the Bitlocker function is blocking the ability to reset without the bitlocker key. We tried to login to Microsoft to get the bitlocker key, but none of the Microsoft accounts associated with

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.


First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

Break command list: Break Commands

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

 

Unable to login to the PC

Note: The article talks about resetting the PC. It is not advised to reset the PC if you don’t have the backup of the data.



You can also try booting the PC into safe mode and see if you are able to login. Refer the article

Unable to login to the PC after updating to Windows 10 1903 update

I understand that you are facing issues while logging in to the PC after installing the latest Windows update. I appreciate your time and effort in trying to resolve the issue by performing certain steps to login.



To understand the issue better, please respond to the questions below:

1. Is the PC connected to university network/domain network?
   
2. Is the computer connected to the internet while you are trying to login to your computer?
   

If you are not connected to internet, please connect an Ethernet cable to the PC and then try logging.



However, I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and check if that helps.



Method 1:



Try booting the PC in to safe mode and check if you are able to login. Refer the article

If the issue persists, please try the next method.



Method 2:



Since you are unable to login, I would suggest you to try rolling back the update and check. Refer the section

In addition, you can also try resetting the password for the university account and check if you are able to login. In order to reset the password please get in touch with the university.
