Windows 10: Can't open 'This PC' in explorer.exe

I recently noticed that I can't open my file explorer from the shortcut in the taskbar.

When trying to, explorer.exe crashes and the whole desktop + taskbar restarts.


I noticed that I can open directory directly just fine from the execute window win + r. So I can use explorer just fine, but when trying to open 'This Pc' it keeps crashing. I changed the default open behavior from navigating to 'This Pc' to 'quick access' and now opening works fine, but the problem with 'This Pc' persists.


I recently changed some entries in the registry yes i know.. to tidy up my context menu.

Just before I noticed my issue I delete the key for 'Open with Code' Visual Studio Code located in "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*".

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Ineternet Explorer 11 not opening web pages(ie Yahoo).

To address this concern, we suggest that you follow these steps on how to clear your cache in Internet Explorer 11:

• In Internet Explorer, select the Tools button, point to
  Safety, and then select Delete browsing history.
• Choose the types of data or files you want to remove from your PC, and then select
  Delete.

You may also try to add the webpage to Trusted Sites zone:

• Open Internet Explorer.
• Select the Tools button, then click Internet Options.
• Click the Security tab.
• Select Trusted sites, then click Sites.
• Uncheck "Require server verification" check box.
• Type the URL in the "Add this website to the zone" box and click
  Add.
• Click OK.
