Windows 10: Can't read from source file or disk when copying files between OS and external hard drive

Hello community services,I cannot transfer my files from my computer Windows 11 Acer Aspire E15 to my easystore 5 TB external hard drive because I have been experiencing the error Can't read from source file or disk even though the file I am copying is not corrupt if it is corrupt, then I could not have been able to play the game. It is a necessary file for Euro Truck Simulator 2, and it is called base.scs. I cannot even reduplicate the file, because I have been playing the game for five years, working hard, adding mods over time, and don't know if they are still on the internet or not

Getting the error "Can't read from the source file or disk" when trying to copy video files

Hello, I am using a laptop with Windows 10 installed.

When trying to copy video files to an external hard drive for storage, I get the error "Can't read from the source file or disk" about half-way through the copy process, and the file cannot be copied. This only happens with specific files, as other files
copy easily. Even files from the same show copy just fine, but a random few will not copy over. For example, I try to copy a 20 episode TV series to the hard drive, but I get the error for episodes 4, 12, and 19 while the rest go over fine. The episodes that
do not work stays consistent every try.

Also, the video files for which I have been getting this error play just fine without any issues.

I have never gotten this error until recently, but now it happens nearly every time I try doing something like this.

Possible solutions that I tried but did not work

• Restarting the computer
• Plugging the external hard drive into a different USB port
• Running CHKDSK on the external hard drive (no errors found)
  
• Running CHKDSK on the computer's internal hard drive (no errors found)
  
• Running System File Checker (nothing found)
  
• Correcting file ownership
• Renaming the file

The most interesting thing I found though was that the problem persisted when I tried a different external hard drive, leaving me to believe that the external hard drive was not the cause of the issue. In fact, I even still got the error when trying to copy
the video files to other locations on my computer. Could this mean that something is wrong with my internal hard drive?

Cannot copy files from external drive

Thank you for replying back to us.

1. Did you try to create a new user account and try to copy the files from your external drive to your computer?
   
2. What is the location that you are trying to past the file? For example, are you pasting the files from your external drive to your Desktop, Documents, or somewhere else?
   
3. Are you able to copy the same files from the external drive to the some other PC?
   
4. Are the files write protected on your external drive?
   

Meanwhile, try the below troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Go to the destination folder on your computer, where you are trying to copy the files from your external drive. Let’s create a
New Folder on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click on New Folder from your desktop and
Right Click on some blank space and click on Properties
and go to General tab.

Step 3: Under Attributes, completely uncheck the
Read-only option. (The box should be blank, check it again if it has a checkmark or a small square inside it).

Step 3: Click on Apply and
OK.

Step 4: Now, open one of the files on your external drive and do the same, i.e.,
Right Click on a file (NOT THE FOLDER) >
Properties > General and under Attributes, uncheck
Read-only option.

Step 5: Click on Apply and
OK.

Now, see if you are able to copy this file from your external drive to your computer.

Disk / file copy issue

Hi Bob,

It seems that the large folder that you moved to the external hard drive has appeared to be the main video folder. To isolate this case, we suggest that you create a new folder on the external hard drive first before copying/moving any files/folders.

By the way, we would like to ask the following information to help us sort out and address the issue:

• What's the make and model of your hard drive?
• Have you tried safely removing and reconnecting your hard drive from your PC?

In the meantime, please create a new folder on the external hard drive first, then try copying/moving a file/folder and see if it saves on the folder you specified.
