Windows 10: Can't remove old email address from account or sign in with new one. Security page has both...

I have recently updated the security page of my Microsoft account with my new info.

This however was not fully succesfull.


If I now try to log in with the new email address, the error message pops up that that microsoft account does not exist.

Visiting the the security page of my account shows my new address as primary alias, this is correct.

In he 2 step authentication page my old email address is still there together with the new one.

When I try to remove the old address the error message is displayed that this is not possible.


Because of this I am also unable to use the microsoft store.

Here is the step to remove that old email address.

Start typing an email address into the “To” field. As soon as you see the old email address being recommended as one of the potential candidates, use the down arrow key to scroll through the list of suggestions. Once you highlight the old email address, type the delete key. In many cases, this will actually remove the entry not only from the current list of suggestions but from future suggestions as well. You may even find that as you mouse over the drop-down list the highlighted item will have an “x” to explicitly allow you to delete it.

Just do this step and your good to go.

How to remove defunct Email Address from Account

If the email address is listed under "Account aliases" on the Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page for your Microsoft account online, then it would be an added alias.
