  1. Can't see files on old XP HD connected to win10 machine by USB

    Hi,

I got converter cables for my old XP hard drive to connect it to my current win10 machine via USB. New machine sees the drive, but when I try to go into it the only thing on it is the folder "recovery," and when I click on that it says "this folder is empty." There should be a ton of stuff on there... it says 243 MB of 349 MB on the drive are used!

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

    :)

  2. New build PC w/SSD and new HD + new Win10 Retail usb + old HD with Win10 oem

I was informed that I can not use my current copy of Win10 on my new build because it's OEM. Soooo, I bought ANOTHER copy of Win10 Retail on usb from the Microsoft Store.

    Now my question:

I'll install the new copy of Win10 onto my new computer's SSD and will be set to boot from it. All my pics, files, music, etc is on my old HD (along with Win10 oem). Since I'll be booting from the SSD with the new copy of Win10, will it cause problems if
I simply add the old HD to my new build, to access all my files? Or do I need to painstakingly transfer everything from it to the new HD through a usb?

I won't be able to run both computers at the same time because I'll be using the power supply from the old one.

    Any suggestions?

Lost photo/scanned files metadata Win XP - Win 10 Laplink transfer

    Hi Vanessa,

quick reply just to placehold while I get the screen shots you wanted.

    To answer your questions

    1. there are 2 answers for this,

    • those pictures transfered XP system HD to Win 10 HD, No, the details were never available on the Win 10 machine, they just seem to have been dropped or lost in the laplink transfer, and
    • for those on my external hard drive they have never been viewable on this XP machine but remain viewable if I pug the external HD into the old WinXP machine - which I guess means that the data are still held or associated with the picturesand readable
using Win XP - whether those data are in the images file or in an associated database that references the image file I dont know (but you might?)
    2. yes I will get shots from the source XP machine and the target (this) Win 10 machine

    3. Yes, all the pics whether transfered WinXP HD to Win10 HD using laplink or accessing te same backed up images using file explorer

    4. Yes, my Win10 user account on this machine has admin privs and so does the user account I use on my win XP machine.

I will get and post screenshots later today. Thanks for the reply and apologies for the very tardy response from me!

Can't see files on old XP HD connected to win10 machine by USB

    getting files off old HD

    quick question:

I've got an old HD that has a ton of image scans on it that I want to get, but it's an old machine and I can't get it to boot all the way since it's an office/work machine that is no longer recognized by the network here...

Can I simply pull the HD, plug it into my current machine, and look at the files that way? I know there's a method, but I've just never tried it.

If I hook the old drive up to my mobo as a 2nd drive, and boot the machine as usual from it's current drive, are there any steps I need to access the 2nd drive? Or should it just appear in "my computer" and I'll have access?

I plan on hooking this up to my old backup machine, which boots off a sata HD. The old drive in question is an IDE drive.

I'm asking because the IT guys here at work haven't gotten around to helping me and the damn workorder is more that a month old already...
