Windows 10: Can't type in search bar since Windows 10 update

If I try to type in the search bar in the bottom left, it just slightly greys out and I can't type anything.


My keyboard is working fine obviously otherwise I couldn't type in here.


I did get a message on my phone I think! about Cortana not working or something but ignored it as I don't use Cortana anyhow but wonder if this could have been related. No idea where that message is so can't check what it said.


Also if I press windows symbol and x and select search, nothing happens either.


I've tried the C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe trick but that doesn't work.


Any ideas?

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.

If you meant the Cortana search bar, review the suggested solutions on these threads:

Windows 10 download speed issues

Try this method:

• First of all from Start Menu, open Settings (Type settings in the search bar and it will appear).
• locate and select “Update and Security“.
• in this window, Locate “Advanced Options”. Click on it.
