Windows 10: Can't Update Apps From Windows Store Error 0x80070005

I have several apps that refuse to update with the error 0x80070005. Some of the apps include Groove Music, Microsoft Photos and Films and TV. Here is what I have tried so far.

1- Checked the time, date, time zone and region is correct. User account control is enabled.

2- Run the WSReset.exe as administrator

3- Gain full control over packages folder using the advice here:

4- Control Panel/Troubleshooting/View All/Windows Store Apps/run troubleshooter. The troubleshooter did a few things and also ran WS reset and reported the Windows Store cache may be damaged.




I tried to uninstall and reinstall one app but it refused to reinstall so I had to use system restore to get it back. I am the only user logged on as the administrator.

Is there anything else I can try? Your advice would be appreciated.

Hi, please do this as a matter of routine:
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Then re-register apps:
Apps - Reinstall and Re-register in Windows 8 and 10

Thank you for your help. I ran chkdsk and it reported no errors. I ran Windows Powershell with the first option for the current account (I only have one account) and it ran but reported errors that it was unable to re-register for various reasons including access denied. I will check the other links you have sent. Thanks again.

Hi, you have the following options:
1. Do you have a system restore point you can use? Or disk images you've previously created from which you can restore your PC to a previously working state?
2. Examine the event log as described in the report and see if you can make anything of it.
3. Reset permissions using Tweaking.com's free cautious repair tool (easily findable).
4. Research the error message 0x80073CF6
which gives e.g.

- the conclusion seems to be to do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs and most settings.


Here's my write-up on it.
An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed, and x64 if you have a 64 bits OS, else x86 (32 bits).

Recommendation:
Before you perform the following major repair procedure, do create a disk image (see below).

Installation & Upgrade Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Tutorials
- this includes a link from which you can obtain a Windows 10 iso file (" download a Windows 10 ISO"), or create a Win 10 bootable medium.

I would recommend creating the bootable medium, as this can be used
- for any future in-place upgrade repair install
- to boot from and use its recovery options should Windows become unbootable.
- to clean install Windows

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- However: if you have installed some on a 2nd drive, these must be uninstalled or reinstalled on C: - else you will get an error message that you can not keep my apps because they arein an unsupported directory.
- no personal data should be affected
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
- Windows.old will be created
- system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
- you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
- inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
- if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.


Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
- preserve your system (and your sanity)
- back up your data
- restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

 

Thank you very much for this further information. After doing more research and considering various options the Windows 10 upgrade installation seems the solution with the least hassle. I make a back up of the C Drive every week using Windows backup. However I am not sure if the oldest backup I have is free of the problem. Thanks again for all your advice and help.

I tried several more attempts using the Windows app troubleshooter in Control panel to fix the problem and failed.

I also tried to rename the Cache folder and the problem persisted.

I also tried again to uninstall one problem app but it would not reinstall. Windows restore also failed to recover the uninstalled app evidently due to the problem discussed here:

Evidently many others are having problems with a broken Windows 10 Store. Reinstalling Windows does not always cure the problem. Other fixes might succeed according to the very long thread below:

In the end I decided to try an upgrade install. I downloaded Windows 10 to a usb from the approved Microsoft site.

A USB was easier to use as I got a warning the files would not fit on the standard DVD I was using. One needs a double layer DVD or a USB for Win 10 pro (the files take up 4.42 Gbt). I booted into Windows and launched setup from the usb.

The good news is that after the Win 10 upgrade installation (the option to keep files and apps) Windows and all the apps were running just fine! It was quite quick and painless. I should have tried this a lot sooner! Later I can decide to delete the Windows_old files. Thanks again for all your help.

I wanted to thank the OP, Chris, for this thread. I was going through the same 0x80070005 with the built-in Microsoft apps; could never get them to update no matter what trick worked for others. Also, and I think this was related, I couldn't use MS' Media Creation tool either. It would always fail with an error when trying to download/verify the image.

I had recently moved to a new laptop (via Laplink's PCMover) and I gather something was botched in the process. The upgrade install finally fixed it! *Smile
