If you can't install it from windows update you can try to install it manually, it's the same KB5015684 obtained with windows update.

I wish things are that simple. My error code was 0x80246017, and I don't have KB5020435 installed so it's a dead end. BTW, MS lists like 6 or 7 error codes of the format 0x8024xxxx on the "troubleshooting WU problems", and when you chose next step, it suggests generic steps: run WU troubleshooter, check if your disk has no errors, is your remote disk is accessible, etc. Same as MS community; each similar error has completely different cause and (re)solution.
MS in notorious for this- if it works then OK, if it doesn't then good luck.

 

Windows 10 version 2004 features update. Error 0x800701b1

I am running Windows 10 version 1909 Build 18363.959. This was installed fairly recently as a complete reset / reinstall was performed 2 weeks ago.

I have read other posts that suggest the error is due to an external HDD problem - this is not the case as I don't have any external HDD installed - I disconnected an external drive that I ONLY use for data storage (not an OS copy) prior to attempting the
install.

The install has failed 3 times with the same error in the course of a week, each time with me simply using Windows Update in Settings to trigger the update attempt.

It takes around 45 minutes to reach a RESTART point. Press Restart now and the machine restarts jumping almost immediately to 64% install completed and fairly quickly restarts again. Check the Settings / Update and the error message is visible "We couldn't
install this update, but you can try again 0x800701b1)"

I ran a disk test using Paragon Hard Disk Manager Advanced 17 and both internal SSDs (the C / boot drive plus a second drive used for internal storage) are found to be fine.

I don't really want to completely install update 2004 as a clean install due to the other programs / apps I have installed and the time to do the reinstall - but if that is the ONLY answer I will do it.

Any other suggestions to achieve an update would be welcome.
