Windows 10: Can't upgrade laptop to Windows 10

I am having problems upgrading an HP laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Premium. When you select the Windows 10 icon in the taskbar it comes back with a note saying this laptop is not compatible but when you check the report it finds everything okay.

I bypassed that upgrade icon and went to the Microsoft website to start the update. It downloaded and started to install and got to around 97% when I got told to try Microsoft support with the code 0xC1900200. That really did not help me. It offered to retry and it downloaded again and this time it got stuck checking for Windows 10 updates.

I think this laptop may have other problem because when I check for Windows 7 updates it checks forever. I am not quite sure what to do now. The laptop hard drive was upgraded to an SSD, maybe I should put back that hard drive and try the upgrade on that?

Apparently 0xC1900200 means incompatibility.

Windows delivers the GWX (Get Windows 10) to every computer having a previous qualified version installed; as included in windows update. They dont care about the hardware at this point.

When we run the GWX app, if it says that the hardware is incompatible, we should not proceed. Specially for a laptop. It needs the OEM supplied drivers to run its hardware components properly. If the laptop is not compatible with windows 10, if the OEM does not list the Windows 10 drivers to download, then better you dont upgrade the laptop.

I would suggest you to go back to Windows 7. If you have a system image previously made, restore that image. Or simply perform a clean install with windows 7.

I tried Windows Defender and discovered it was not turned on and when I tried to turn it on it would quickly turn itself off again. I used another anti-virus program to check out the laptop but it found no problem. Obviously this laptop has some problems.

My next step is to put the original drive back into the machine and try the Windows 10 upgrade from that and if that also fails do a restore of this laptop to the original Windows 7.

The other option is to upgrade using an ISO. Twp things are not clear to me

1) Is the Win7 box up-to-date with SP1? The ISO is the only way to upgrade if it is not.

2) Are the correct bit-depth and edition (Win7 Home = Win10 Home / Core) being used - I suppose it is if this is a web or GWX install.

I had a laptop to upgrade - MS appraiser said too bad you can't. The details showed that the appraiser identified my network driver as the issue. Using the ISO Win10 installed fine on that box - every device worked with the Windows Update supplied drivers.

You might also try the 32-bit install in case your CPU does not support all of the features required by Win10

 

I am updating this for a 78 year lady that just spent 4 months in a hospital intensive care unit. It looks like her adult children did a number on her laptop. I pulled out the SSD, wiped everything and right now Windows 10 Home is installing from a DVD. When it is finished I will activate it using the GenuineTicket.xml file that I created before I pulled the SSD. I am keeping my fingers crossed. If that fails I will reinstall the original HDD and go from there.

Thanks everyone, the install worked and Windows 10 Home has activated. Now it a matter of doing the latest updates and setting up the e-mail account. I feel much better when things work the way they are supposed to work. *chuckle
