The HP warranty stuff is only their propaganda. Ignore it, you're covered by your serial number. The screen simrick shows of the partition will look different on yours. You will have several. Select each and DELETE. Each one, until you have only 1 big unallocated partition. That's where to install. Windows will do the rest.

ok sounds good to me. Ive done numerous system wipes in my day and this is my first run in with windows 10. so before I go hacking into it. Ive got the installation media on usb and the system restore flash drive as well so thats why I wont be needing all the drive partitions that are currently on it?

That is true. The HP recovery thumb will actually be kinda useless. Windows will make it's own recovery partition. It's best to start with a completely empty unallocated drive so there are no crumbs left over. Just delete all until you have just 1 and install there.

ok first thanks for the help it is truly appreciated. the usb drive I made from the media creation tool, is that going to be the up to date version of windows? or will that be updated after the clean install which should go without issue since all is fresh and new

Do you have the key written down? You won't need to enter it, but it's just a safeguard to have it handy.

And do not have your ext drive attached.

Put the install thumb in. In My PC, open it with Explorer. Look at the bottom of the list of files, you'll see SETUP. Right click SETUP and click properties. Click the details tab. It will display the build and version. Post that back, please.

Yeah, that's the November update. You'll have a few cumulative updates to install once that is on.

There's most of your answer! It will install the current build, 10586, NOT 10240. Either on re-boot or when you check for updates, It will go thru some cumulative updates and security updates and a few other things. You may have to check for updates and reboot a few times, cause you've got some catching up to do. When all is done, you should be at 10586.494. The entire Windows 10 update history can be found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history

You can check your build and version at any time by WIN KEY + R, enter WINVER, and click OK.
