Windows 10: Can't use my Right Click Quick Menu

Hey! I am having an extremely annoying issue where I can't use the right click menu on Taskbar.

Whenever I open that menu and click on something, it refuses to open. It acts as if I never clicked it. However, 'Search','Run', 'Desktop', and 'Shut down' work, it's the rest that don't.

It's probably worth noting that I had this problem on Windows 8.1 also. I just upgraded today hoping it would resolve itself but it hasn't. I haven't changed anything major on my system and I don't know when this started but I can't imagine it was that long ago. I am on an HP pavilion desktop and I can open these things separately via a search, it's only this menu that is broken.

Quick access pinning and unpinning does not work in Windows 10.

In an Explorer window, my Windows 10 "Quick Access" menu does not take new pins or remove existing ones based on folder actions initiated via the right-click menus.

For example, if I right click "Folder XYZ" in an Explorer window, select "Pin to Quick Access" - it does not get added to the Quick Access menu.

If I right click an item in the Quick Access menu, select "Unpin from Quick Access" - it does not get removed from the Quick Access menu.

So the old "Favourites" functionality is gone. There appears to be zero control on this replacement menu.

There is a tutorial on the Eightforums site that shows how to edit the Start button (Win +X) Context menu with a little program that you download. It also has a restore defaults option which might get you back working again. I have not tried it but I understand it works in Windows 10 too!

I downloaded the app and attempted to just restore defaults which didn't work. I then manually deleted Control Panel and added it again and it still didn't work. It's as if the entire menu is permanently unresponsive. I've restarted my PC also to no avail.

 

A clean install of Windows 10 will almost surely fix this.

 

I don't know how to do a clean install of 10 since I have 8.1 and have upgraded by just doing the automatic upgrade thing. It's also a ton of effort to fix this problem, I'd much rather try and do something that doesn't require a full reformat. Especially since I'm having trouble with 10 for other reasons not listed in this thread.

 

• Download Windows 10 ISO file from here: Windows 10 Download - Tech Bench
• Use Rufus - Create bootable USB to create a bootable USB stick
• plug in the USB, then run setup.exe. This will do an in place repair.

 

I will do this for the future so I won't have to worry about dealing with W10 installs, however I managed to fix it by doing a windows 'reset', so all is good now!
