captplay.com (should be .con) SCAM Beware

    Hi there

Even old hands can make mistakes -- I was browsing something and accidently clicked something on captplay.com instead of the thing I was buying.

A few minutes later I got an email saying I had a 5 day trial after which if not cancelled it would be 45 USD a month.

Of course there was NO WAY to cancel online -- apparently there was some phone number in USA one had to call to "confirm cancellation" but on googling - nobody ever will answer the phone and it just costs MORE money..

Anyway I simply IMMEDIATELY phoned my Bank - cancelled the credit card and will get a new one so captplay.com won't get any money.

Bank was fine -- I just told them cancel the credit card - I told them I think I "Lost it" on the London metro system even though I wasn't in London at the time !!! -- Bank immediately cancelled card and won't authorize any payments including the "Free 1 USD" the site had already attempted to collect !!!!. for the "Free 5 day trial".

WATCH OUT FOR THESE SCAMS -- I'm usually very careful when online shopping but it shows anybody can make an easy slip.

If you Ever get any of these "Free trials" make 100% sure there's no "default subscription" attached if you don't cancel --and if you are determined to go ahead ensure that there is a cancellation mechanism that doesn't require a phone call to a dubious number on the other side of the planet.

Anyway this is the site to be 100% careful of --captplay.com

I think I may have just got scammed, please help.? | Yahoo Answers

etc -- loads more so BEWARE of this and similar sites.

Note again no AV software etc will protect against these sorts of Scams which unfortunately are getting much more common now.

    Cheers

  2. I received a call that said my Microsoft key has expired.

Warning: There are "Tech Support Scams" pretending to be Windows 10 Activation Technologies. Please be vigilant. Microsoft never calls users to inform them their license is expiring. Neither should you get an

Scum does scam, They are getting more sophisticated every day. I never had a credit card, debit cards only. Keep just enough money on payable side so I couldn't loose much. When I have to pay bills I just transfer so much money from another account that nobody but me can touch.

  7. that sucks, but wouldn't have it easier to tell your bank to deny any charge coming from that site?

    Hi there

under EU rules (Iceland is EEA but follows the same principle) using a CREDIT card gives you more security as you can get your money back if the goods are not what you ordered or you don't get them. With Debit cards - you have ZERO guarantee of getting money back so for online shopping Credit Cards are actually SAFER. Credit cards also have an EU / EEA wide insurance protection that you don't pay if it wasn't you making the transaction -- with Debit cards - it's up to the Bank -- and most Banks are fairly Rapacious - they won't give you back anything without a lot of effort so I'd actually NEVER use a debit card for Online transactions.

Note EU / EEA credit card protection works World wide -- I'm sure in USA there is probably similar Bank protection.

@brainvision -- It's easier to cancel the card and get a new one -- have you ever tried PHONING a Bank these days and giving instructions -- especially when it's usually a horrendous Indian Call centre which raises other concerns.

Much simpler to say Card Lost / Stolen then anything on that card is blocked immediately. Banks have a dedicated immediate answering quick number for Lost and Stolen Cards that usually doesn't require endless Menu systems on those horrendous call centres.

Anyway please watch out for all these sorts of Scams --- a lot can't be defended by any sort of software - so even if you have the best A/V and malware protection on the planet don't get lulled into a false sense of security.

@dencal -- not sure how Bitdefender would have prevented this - in theory one was making a "perfectly normal" transaction -- the only way would be if these sites are in a database to be blocked - and of course to get blocked someone has to have had a bad experience before the site can get logged - "Chicken / Egg situation". !!

    Cheers

SMS subscriptions are a similar thing. You enter your mobile number to get a text to download something for example. Then they keep charging you €5 a week for these SMS until you figure out how to stop it.

That's the advice I give to all my clients. Here in the U.S., most banks will make it right in the case of a debit card being compromised, but you're broke until that happens. By law, you are only liable for $50 in case of fraudulent use of a credit card. Most credit card companies won't even charge that, and go out of their way to handle the situation and get you a new card ASAP. They want you to feel comfortable using their product.
