Windows 10: Casting to TV issues

I have rarely had success with Casting from Windows 10 to my smart TV so for years have used my Samsung Android Tablet and Chromecast.

Now I want to try again, with both my Android Phone and PC. However, when I click Cast media to device ( in Tools) in Edge the response is "source not supported". Meaning what? It identifies my TV correctly (unlike other wireless devices on the same network) but I cannot cast to it.

So, in Windows I cannot Cast reliably via Chromecast (it works occasionally). I want to use Miracast which I thought was available in Windows / Edge(?) and in particular to cast the screen as well as media (eg. to read documents on a larger screen). Windows Store has very few (and poor) casting apps (unlike Android) to experiment with, unless I have missed them.

A further possibility, is that I also have an HDMI cable connecting my PC and TV, but I have never got this option to work.

The other similar thread to this says 'Cast to' used to work to a Samsung TV but now it doesn't. This would imply something is 'wrong' with our Win 10?

Can anyone suggest some more troubleshooting steps to try to determine what the issue is?

Try the steps listed below to cast Desktop screen:

• Make sure the Chromecast is connected to the TV and both the devices are On.
  
• Expand the Google Cast extension icon and select
  ‘Cast screen/window (experimental)’ option.
  
• When prompted to cast entire screen,
  Accept and click on ‘Share’.
  
• Open ‘Photos App’ to mirror photos on the PC.
  

You may search for an app that can cast your media to any
Google Cast device on your favorite search engine, and install it from the Store.
