Windows 10: Cautious 72yo Newbie

My first post; As yet I have not installed Win10 pro 64bit. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64bit.
Firstly I am concerned about my ability to get to understand how the OS functions in regard to allowing the use of non MS programs.
My second concern is, from what I have read, that I have no control what updates are installed. This concerns me as I would like to believe that it my computer therefore I control what goes on it.
Am I a naive or is it, as an older bloke, I don't understand today's computing environment*Shock

I would be cautious about proprietary apps. I am more cautious. I would say probably and to check with the developer

Sounds good. Just be cautious.

 

If you were to check the OEM forums, you'd find LOTS of folks whose Win7 machines got corrupted because of the Win10 Upgrade. So, BEFORE you charge down that path, you want to have a way to restore your current system to working order with little work. I recommend doing a full image backup of your system to an external drive, using something like Macrium Reflect:

Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives.
What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD
NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive in only a few minutes.

Also, the Windows Update path of Upgrading to Win10 seems to have its fair share, or more, of problems with Win7 machines. A more successful approach has been to use the Media Creation Tool and select the option to Upgrade the PC: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...d=ms_wol_win10

Also, be advised that there are no current Win10 drivers for the AMD HD 4xxx series cards. The drivers that do work are the Legacy drivers -- but it takes some extra effort to install them. If you look through the Drivers and Hardware section here, you will see some posts by NavyLCDR who provides the details on how to do this successfully.

 

Hello, Greybeard43 and welcome to the Forums. Don't feel alone, I'm not too many years behind you. There are many tutorials here that will help you do most of what you want to do, as well as a lot of knowledgeable people here to help you out. Mark gave some good advice. I would like to add that, while I can't prove it, I believe a lot of people who have problems with the upgrade is because their underlying system had issues before and those issues carried over. Not all, but many.

In this day of computers and the internet, any time you think you are in control, you are mistaken. However, that doesn't mean you have to make it easy for them. Thanks for the welcome. Looks like that one needs to tread carefully with the upgrade. I'll take the info above on board and scream help real loudly if I encounter challenges when I make the change. My thoughts are to wait for a fair period of time before I do change them maybe even do a twin boot setup as described on this forum using my present set up for day to day use as I learn the intricacies of Win10.*Rolleyes

 

There is a learning curve with it, but it is familiar enough that you can do all the basic stuff easily. It is enough like Windows 7, that you can be up and running pretty quickly.
