CbsTemp folder is 53% of total Available Disk - Can I delete folders?

Helping my dad out. He has Win 10 laptop with only 1GB free on a 56GB drive. Ran TreeSize and it shows 25GB are in the CbsTemp folder (c:\windows\CbsTemp).

There are hundreds of folders inside this folder - each apparently has a security catalog and a MUM file.

Any idea if this is normal and can I delete these?

    Appreciate any guidance.

    Thanks!

    :)

    Hi Avinash,

Yes, in Treeview expand that CBSTemp folder, right click and delete everything in that folder - typically that folder should be empty . . .

If you have any problem deleting the contents of that folder follow the procedure above to temporarily turn off the Windows Modules Installer service . . .

It should be a result of Trustedinstaller so you should be able to delete contents. Mine has 0 bytes.

You could investigate the built in disk cleaner and see if it has an entry to remove them.

  6. Go to 'This Computer' and right tick on the 'C' drive. Then select 'Properties'.
    You should see Disk Cleanup.

Because Windows protects itself, using it should not hurt anything.
You should be able to do this on any drive you have installed. One at a time.

    I would try this first.

    Thanks all for your responses.

I have tried the built-in disk cleaner and CCleaner, but neither of them removed these files/folders.

It's interesting that I can't find any information about this online - the searches typically bring up discussions around cleaning up winsxs.

Anyway, I will try deleting some folders as CountMike suggests and see how it goes.

Thanks Layback Bear. I'm not going to delete TrustedInstaller just the folders in cbstemp.
Do you know of a problem if I do this?

I can't find any documentation of problems with deleting CbsTemp contents. You could always take a conservative approach and back the contents up to an external drive, then delete the system/boot drive copy. Should problems manifest later, you could restore that directory (or key content items, if identified) and keep on trucking!
FWIW, my CbsTemp folder is empty on all of my Windows 10 PCs (all 8 of them). Seems like having stuff persist there despite cleanup attempts might lead to interesting results when you try to delete them (permissions problems, perhaps?). Let us know what happens if and when you try.
    Thanks, and HTH,

  10. CBS temp logs are created when you run sfc /scannow.
Sometimes these logs are helpful if you have a problem.
If your not having a problem you can delete them.
The next time you run sfc /scannow it will create a new log.

CbsTemp folder is 53% of total Available Disk - Can I delete folders?

I left a couple months (most recent) of folders in there and deleted ~18GB.
    All good so far.
Will delete the rest after a few days without incident.
My next question will be why are these folders getting created and retained (taking up space) while other people don't seem to keep these files...

  13. This might be helpful later one in your computer life.
I use this method and it works well.

  14. Logs are created each time you execute SFC /Scannow or DISM commands. You can delete these logs using CCleaner. I have attached the selections that will delete these files.
