Windows 10: CD Drive Appears in File Explorer when no CD is installed and appeared after Windows 11...

Suddenly I have a phantom CD Drive Drive H: when I go to "This PC" in File Explorer. I don't have any CD drives attached to my PC. If I click on the CD Drive icon it tells me to insert a disc. Is anyone else seeing this? It first appeared right after a recent Windows 11 update KB5025239.

CD/DVD drive won't play CDs & does not appear in This PC list in File Explorer

Hello --

The CD/DVD drive on my older PC with Windows 10 has stopped playing CDs, and the drive does not appear under This PC in File Explorer.

- Yet Device Manager lists the drive and under Properties>General states "This device is working properly."

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Further details:

- This is a reconditioned Lenovo ThinkPad T430s, running Windows 10 Pro

- The drive is Matsushita DVD-RAM UJ8C2 with up-to-date Microsoft driver

- Before it stopped playing and showing up in Explorer, some CDs were intermittently recognized within WMP. I thought this might be b/c of disc condition (borrowed from public library).

 

CD/DVD drive not appearing in File Explorer since latest Windows 10 update

After the latest Windows 10 update (version 1607) on 15/10/16 the CD/DVD drive on my Acer Aspire 4552 laptop does not appear in File Explorer and can't be accessed. The drive, a Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH, is listed in Device Manager with no error alerts. Clicking
on Properties shows the device working normally. I have tried updating the drivers and windows says I have the latest drivers. I have run the usual troubleshooting methods with no success. The drive spins when I put a CD in and did work in the previous version
of Windows 10. In Disk Management the drive is listed as Drive 1 but is 'not initialised' (C: is Drive 0). I have checked the pc's BIOS and the drive is listed no 2 in the boot sequence.

Comparing Device Manager on this PC with another, I see there is no category for DVD/CD drives listed on the problem PC. The DVD/CD drive is listed under 'Disk drives'. Does this indicate the source of the problem?

I would suggest you to follow the steps below:

  Press Windows key + X.
  
• 
  Click file explorer from the list.
  
• 
  Select the CD/DVD drive and hit Enter.
  
• 
  Select the files you want to copy from the CD/DVD, then select the drive where you want to paste or save.
