CD/DVD Drive not showing in device manager

    Hi all,

Im all out of options, hope someone can help! Hopefully you can see the laptop details as I just entered them when signing up, if not just ask.

CD DVD drive has diappeared from explorer and device manager. Its still listed in BIOS as a boot device (though just says cd/dvd drive without make or model or anything) It's also not in the list of SATA devices though maybe it never was.. The drive opens fine and an inserted disk spins up but nothing happens.

    I have so far tried:
    - Show hidden items in device manager
    - Unistall SATA controller under IDE ATA/ATAPI tab in device manager and restart
    - Check regedit for upper/lower filters
    - Add the new reg key EnumDevice1
    - All windows updates
    - All driver updates including a third party driver finder
    - Windows hardware troubleshooter
    - Updated to latest firmware from MSI
    - Got latest EC flash from MSI
    - Physically remove the drive and restart. Then replace and restart.
    - Reinstall windows.

The laptop came with windows 10 so its not like I upgraded as seems to be the cause of most peoples issue. Also I think the drive itself its okay since it spins up. Its not expensive to replace though if necessary... its made by LG, model is GUD0N.

Im not a tech person really so im all at sea! Everything up to now has had clear instructions to follow. Didnt even know there was such a thing as a BIOS untill this problem so Im hoping this will be obvious to someone.

    Many thanks, Joe

    :)

Running a drive for CDs and photos

Also, is the CD drive showing up at all in the Device Manager?:

Right-click the Start Button > Device Manager

Is there a category "DVD/CD-ROM drives"

If so if you expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives" is the CD-ROM showing up without error?

What computer do you have (make/model)?

Also, in the Device Manager is the CD/DVD drive showing up as a "DVD/CD-ROM drive" or as an "Other device"?

Also, in the Device Manager if you double-click the CD/DVD drive, under the "General" tab what is the "Device status"?

CD/DVD Drive not showing in device manager

Hi, try this free tool - note it has a very cautious approach with several steps before attempting a repair. Easy to find.

    Select only repair 18.

This happened to me once since I had accidentally blocked an essential driver PxHlpa64.sys in Autoruns, I have the following drivers for a BluRay drive:

    Thanks for replies guys!

Dalchina, I used the tool.. Finding it hard to do a power reset at the laptop doesn't have a removable battery, even running the battery right out didn't seem to properly reset it. I did the other steps prior to running the repair tool for the cd/dvd drive alone. It ran and told me to restart but to no avail *Sad It gave this in the log:

    Starting Repairs...

iTunes or GEARAspiWDM.sys not found, not applying UpperFilters iTunes Reg Key

Steve C How do I check to see if these drivers are present / blocked on my system?

    Thanks again for the help

Do you have a system restore point you can use? (E.g. if you know the drive disappeared recently?).

    The references to these
    iTunes or GEARAspiWDM.sys
might suggest the disappearance is linked to something you installed or uninstalled... any thoughts?

No restore points unfortunately. I had one from a month or so ago but it didn't make any difference. No idea when the drive disappeared, only that it was working 4 or so months ago. Only thing that has come up at all is on the drive manufacturers website while looking for drivers it mentioned that some machines come with their software package, cyberlink media suite, preinstalled and that potentially without it the drive wont work. I don't remember this program and cant seem to find out if this machine came with it but it is entirely possible that I unistalled it at some point thinking it was bloatware.. their customer service is 9-5 weekdays which isn't entirely helpful to an employed person.

    - I don't believe that, personally. You can clean install Win 10 from MS - nothing added- and DVD drives work.
    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

There are quite a few references to itunes and the drive disappearing. I think that's the clue.
    E.g.
Itunes makes my CD/DVD Drive Disappear! | Captive8 Media

The genuine GEARAspiWDM.sys file is a software component of iTunes by Apple
GEARAspiWDM.sys from itunes causes dvd-rom not to work - Dell Community

    - suggests Gear drivers (whatever they may be_ are separately installed. (Old reference from Vista days)

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later - Apple Support

Aaaaaaaa that first link may have it... Ive followed a bunch of posts telling me to remove upper / lower filters but they have been specifying the exact key to look in. This one tells you to search through them and there are two in my list, one says cd rom and one says disk drives. The cd rom one that ive been pointed to before had no upper / lower filters but the disk drives one does! Deleted, doing a restart now fingers crossed

Or not. Maybe that was the hdd since the laptop failed to start due to inaccessible boot device. System restore hopefully to the rescue.. I don't think I even had iTunes. And couldn't find that particular driver with a search either. Hooray.

Be very careful removing disk filter drivers since your PC may fail to boot.

Just re-read your first post- noted you said you had tried re-installing Windows. Maybe what Tweaking.com was reporting was finding something suggesting iTunes/Gear should be installed (but it never had been).
    =>
because iTunes or GEARAspiWDM.sys not found, not applying UpperFilters iTunes Reg Key
    - i.e. not doing that fix.

    Hmm.

I find that deleteing any upper and lower filters pertaining to Optical Drives is easy using ImgBurn.........Imgburn is still a great burning package......

You might find the information on deleting those filters here........

Note; once you have the drive recognized within Windows you might have to reinstall whatever burning software you use again.....
