Windows 10: CD reading problem after Windows 11 upgrade

Hi, After installing win 11 on my laptop, I can no longer read previously burned CDs. When I place a burned CD in my usb attached optical drive, I get prompted with How do you want to use this Disc? for burning purposes Like a USB flash drive? or with a CD/DVD player? I can only choose the USB flash drive option as the other is grayed out. When selecting the USB flash drive format, windows promptly reformats the CD and erases the data on it. Note: These CDs contain regular files and I never finalized the sessions so I could add new files to it. Note: I cannot bypass this question even

Also, when using the portable optical drive on Win 10 I have no problems reading and writing to the CDs.

In addition, I used a brand new CD in win 11 laptop and wrote files on the CD when used as USB flash drive. They wrote successfully and I was able to access them. However, After ejecting the CD and re-inserting it in the optical drive I am prompted again to answer the burning question and can only choose the USB flash drive option, which then attempts to reformat the CD.

I have:

updated the driver on the optical drive

updated the bios

tried a couple of registry updates that people suggested in other posts

None of which helped.

To me this appears to be a Win 11 issue, any ideas?

btw- I know CDs are antiquated and I could easily use flash drives. But, Win 11 is giving me the option to use as a USB flash drive and let's me write to it. Why doesn't it let me re-insert it to read it?

CD/DVD Player Not Reading CD or DVD Disks

I would suggest you to follow the below methods to fix issue.

Method 1: I suggest you to run the hardware troubleshooter and check the issue status.

1. Press “Windows key + X”.

2. Type “Troubleshooter” in the Search box and hit enter.

3. Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

4. Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.

5. Follow the On Screen instructions.

Method 2: I suggest you to uninstall and install the network adapter drivers as below and check if it helps.

Step 1: Try updating the DVD\CD-ROM drives from device manager.

• Press Windows key + X and click on
  Device Manager.
• Expand DVD\CD-ROM drives.
• Right click on the driver select Update Driver Software.
• Restart the computer.

Step 2: I suggest you to check and install if there is any latest firmware update for DVD drive from the computer manufacturer.

Cannot get my CD Drive to read CD's

Since upgrading to Windows 10, my CD Drive will not read my music CD's or DVD's. I have tried every solution listed in these forums. In the This PC part on my computer, the drive is showing as DVD RW Drive (D). It worked before the upgrade and now it doesn't.
I have used all the troubleshooting, registry edits, etc. listed in similar forums but it will not read. I usually use iTunes to burn cds and it will not work with iTunes either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop. Thank
