  2. Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro Workstation?

I would say you most likely don't need (or could even really benefit at all from) the workstation edition. Workstations one is for super heavy workloads. Microsoft describes it like this in their announcement about it.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is a high-end edition of Windows 10 Pro, comes with unique support for server-grade PC hardware and is designed to meet demanding needs of mission critical and compute
    intensive workloads.

2017-07 Dynamic Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4025342)

Thank you for your speedy reply.

When the installation reaches 100% and asks me for a restart I cannot view the display as it goes blank. At first I thought this was a system crash but later came to realise it is related to the display and more specifically the HDMI connection from my graphics
card to my 4k display. Therefore I do not see any error messages.

I power down the system and take my pc to a relative who has an older digital connection to a screen, I can then boot normally.

I have used the system recovery option supplied by HP and now have a fresh version of Windows 10. Unfortunately when Windows tries to apply the same cumulative update I have the exact same problem.

    2017-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4025339) Failed 21/7/17 & 22/7/17

2017-07 Dynamic Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4025342) Failed 31/7/17

    Troubleshooting steps:

Factory reset using HP pc recovery system. Fresh install of Windows 64bit.

    Hardware:

    HP Omen 870-175na

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1070 graphics card
