Windows 10: CES 2020: Celebrating new decade of Windows 10 devices and innovation

Intelligent Edge devices and solutions were on full display at the Microsoft CES 2020 Showcase this week. New PCs, connected storefront and IOT solutions demonstrated the power of Microsoft’s unique and growing relationship with its partners around the world.

Working with this vibrant partner ecosystem has long been a priority for Microsoft and it is a key differentiator that’s helped make Windows 10 and Azure successful. Taking a collective, collaborative approach enables the top minds in our industry to work together, accelerate innovation, and ensure we bring great devices and experiences to market for our customers. Together with our partners, we are driving technology forward.

During the first CES of a new decade, we’ve been doing our own 10-year challenge this week, looking back at where we were in 2010 in contrast with how dramatically things have changed since then. Every year along the way has brought exciting innovation across the intelligent edge and computing as a whole, and it’s at these milestones where we can see the dramatic shifts in the tech landscape.

As we close out another great year at CES, let’s look at where we’ve been, how far we’ve come and where we’re headed.

A decade of disruptive change

In 2010, Intel launched its Core i7 line — the first six core desktop CPU. Blackberry owned double the market share of the iPhone and triple that of smartphones running other operating systems. The iPad and Instagram launched. Office 2010 was introduced and surpassed Microsoft’s previous records for adoption, deployment and revenue.

Ten years later, we can see how some of those innovations moved entire markets. Some of them played their role then passed the baton to other creations. And new, disruptive technology trends have emerged, affecting the entire technology industry.

Today we are in an age of services, cloud computing, AI and machine learning. Next-generation Windows PCs and entirely new product categories are being built to incorporate cloud and AI services, support new experiences like virtual and augmented reality, and address our insatiable demand for new ways to work with data.

With these emerging technologies and trends, we are creating new possibilities for the modern PC that weren’t on the radar in 2010. Yet in today’s PCs we still see parallels with the innovation from a decade earlier—in 2020 as in 2010, the whole ecosystem remains focused on delivering new customer scenarios. And as we move into a more connected, intelligent era of computing, PCs today can do what PCs simply could not do a decade ago.

Partner innovations at CES

The impact of the past decade’s innovations is showing up in many ways across a spectrum of devices. Features like Windows Hello, Windows Ink and Cortana all require specific hardware to work well, and this week, our partners have demonstrated innovations that complement our software, like fingerprint readers on the power button and cameras with security features, among many other advancements large and small.

Along with the evolution of devices have come changes in the expectations of both consumers and commercial customers. People want attractive, high-quality devices with no tradeoffs between cost and quality. At CES this week, we’ve seen how our partners continue to offer attractive, no-compromise devices packed with premium features to customers at all price points.

The Windows ecosystem is growing every year, and CES 2020 showcased some of the most innovative devices we’ve seen—from incredibly thin and light laptops, convertibles and 2-in-1s, to powerful gaming rigs, always-connected devices and more. Some of the devices at the show included:

The Acer Swift 3, which supports fast-charging, enabling up to four hours of use with a 30-minute charge.

The ASUS ExpertBook B9, which offers a frameless four-sided NanoEdge display meaning the 14-inch panel fits into a standard 13-inch laptop chassis with a 94% screen-to-body ratio.

The latest version of the popular XPS 13 from Dell, which has reduced its InfinityEdge borders and has a 6.8% larger 16:10 display that spans from all four edges and is 25% brighter than before.

The HP Elite Dragonfly, the first world’s laptop with built-in Tile technology, which allows users to easily find a lost notebook, and is made with ocean bound plastic material with more than 82% of the mechanical parts made from recycled materials.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 with the exclusive Lenovo Q-Control Intelligent Cooling feature that uses AI to optimize battery life by an average of up to 20%.

The Samsung Galaxy Book Flex α, which offers a long-lasting battery, an immersive QLED display capable of producing over 1 billion colors and featuring an ultra-thin bezel, and up to 17.5-hours battery life.

The power of these products shows how Microsoft’s vibrant ecosystem continues to enable the top minds in our industry to work together, accelerate innovation and bring great experiences to market.

Looking ahead

In the next 10 years, we expect this pace of innovation will only accelerate. The 5G networks coming online will process extremely high volumes of data at much faster speeds, driving new streaming experiences and even more services across a range of devices. Graphics will get even better as HDR displays continue to improve and 8K becomes ubiquitous. New types of devices are sure to appear, with dual screen and foldable PCs already on the horizon for 2020.

Customer expectations and demand for the most modern devices will keep rising, and the ways we use PCs will keep evolving as we expand our cloud computing capabilities and our understanding of AI and machine learning.

As we work through this new decade, Microsoft will continue to innovate with our partners to meet these demands, so everyone can achieve more. From 5G to the power of the intelligent edge, I’m excited to see what our partners will bring to market in the new “roaring twenties.”

CES 2020: New commercial devices by Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo

As customers think about more about security and mobility, new devices from Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo—announced this week at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas—provide a productive, secure experience for on-the-go professionals.

Acer

Acer introduced the TravelMate P6, a durable, thin-and-light notebook and the TravelMate P2, a modern device for an increasingly mobile workforce.

The TravelMate P6 battery can be charged up to 50 percent in less than 45 minutes making it an excellent choice for professionals on the go. The 180-hinge allows users to lay it flat to easily share the screen. In addition, the TravelMate P6 is certified for Microsoft Teams and delivers crystal-clear videoconferencing via a four-mic array that picks up vocals from up to 6.5 feet away. The TravelMate P6 also offers powerful security features, including Windows Hello, which allows users to sign in using fingerprint or facial recognition.

Dell

Dell Technologies introduced the Latitude 9510, the world’s smallest and lightest commercial 15-inch PC, which easily fits into a small work bag. At only 3.2 pounds, professionals can travel light without carrying extra weight of battery chargers, adapters, or speakerphone pucks needed for a work day. The Latitude 9510 includes artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to improve battery life based on charge patterns and power usage, as well as launch frequently used applications faster. In addition, users can sign in quickly and securely with Windows Hello.

The Latitude 9510 runs on Windows 10 Pro and will be available globally March 26, 2020. Learn more at Dell.com.

HP

HP announced the HP Elite Dragonfly, the first world’s laptop with built-in Tile technology, which allows users to easily find a lost notebook. Running on Windows 10 Pro, the HP Elite Dragonfly is made with ocean bound plastic material with more than 82 percent of the mechanical parts made from recycled materials. HP Elite Dragonfly with optional Tile integration and HP Sure View Reflect is expected to be available starting February 2020. Lenovo

Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X1 Fold, and ThinkBook Plus, both designed to improve productivity on the go.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold offers a new form factor giving professionals—who frequently switch between phone, tablet, and laptop—multiple ways to use the PC without compromising on performance or screen size. Built from a combination of lightweight alloys and carbon fibre and covered in a leather folio cover, the ThinkPad X1 Fold can easily slip into the smallest of bags. Running Windows 10 Pro, the ThinkPad X1 Fold offers the durability and reliability users expect from any ThinkPad.

The ThinkBook Plus features an innovative e-Ink display on the cover, so users can take notes or create illustrations with the digital pen and then sync to Microsoft OneNote. In addition, essential notifications can be received when the lid is closed allowing users to stay focused during meetings. CES 2020: New Dell smaller thinner XPS 13 and Alienware gaming monitor

At CES, Dell introduced a new XPS aimed at helping you innovate, collaborate and accomplish more in the next decade, as well as the new Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor.

Dell XPS 13 9300 (Model 9300)

With the new XPS 13, Dell showed off a smaller and thinner form factor for users who want maximum screen space, by reducing its InfinityEdge borders. With a 6.8% larger 16:10 display that spans from all four edges, the new 25% brighter XPS InfinityEdge display delivers more screen space to multitask throughout the day and catch all the details of the latest binge-worthy show. And holding true to what XPS fans love most, this new design delivers a 13.4-inch display in an 11-inch form factor— fitting neatly on an airplane tray.

The Project Athena-certified XPS 13 offers 10th Generation Intel Core 10nm mobile processors and long battery life. Simpler and more sustainable packaging eliminates foam, making it easier for users to recycle. Available options include the traditional XPS 13 with Windows 10 or the Developer Edition featuring Ubuntu 18.04LTS.

The XPS 13, starting at $999.99, will be available in the U.S., Canada, Sweden, U.K., Germany and France Jan. 7 and globally Feb. 4.

Built for speed with a 99% sRGB color coverage, the new Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor features fast IPS technology that offers rich colors, a 240Hz refresh rate and a 1 millisecond response time, all in native FHD resolution. It also has AMD Radeon FreeSync and is G-Sync compatible.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2020 - Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) that pave the way for autonomous driving. A new era of mobile computing innovation. The future of immersive sports and entertainment. Intel demonstrated all of these and more today at CES 2020, showcasing how the company is infusing intelligence across the cloud, network, edge and PC, and driving positive impact for people, business and society.

Intel CEO Bob Swan kicked off today's news conference by sharing updates from its Mobileye business, including a of its self-driving robocar navigating traffic in a natural manner. The drive demonstrated Mobiley's unique and innovative approach to deliver safer mobility for all with a combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision, the regulatory science model of RSS and true redundancy through independent sensing systems.

Swan also highlighted Intel's work with the American Red Cross and its Missing Maps project to improve disaster preparedness. Using integrated AI acceleration on 2nd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, Intel is helping the American Red Cross and its Missing Maps project to build highly accurate maps with bridges and roads for remote regions of the world, which helps emergency responders in the event of a disaster.

"At Intel, our ambition is to help customers make the most of technology inflections like AI, 5G and the intelligent edge so that together we can enrich lives and shape the world for decades to come. As we highlighted today, our drive to infuse intelligence into every aspect of computing can have positive impact at unprecedented scale," Swan said.

Intelligence-Driven Mobile Computing

Mobile computing was an area of emphasis, as Intel made announcements spanning new products, partnerships and exciting platform-level innovations that will transform the way people focus, create and engage. Intel Executive Vice President Gregory Bryant announced the following:

First look and demonstration of the newest Intel® Core mobile processors, code-named "Tiger Lake": Tiger Lake is designed to bring Intel's bold, people-led vision for mobile computing to life, with groundbreaking advances in every vector and experience that matters. With optimizations spanning the CPU, AI accelerators and discrete-level integrated graphics based on the new Intel Xe graphics architecture, Tiger Lake will deliver double-digit performance gains, massive AI performance improvements, a huge leap in graphics performance and 4x the throughput of USB 3 with the new integrated Thunderbolt 4. Built on Intel's 10nm+ process, the first Tiger Lake systems are expected to ship this year.

Preview of first Xe-based discrete GPU: Intel Vice President of Architecture for Graphics and Software Lisa Pearce provided insight into the progress on the new Intel Xe graphics architecture, which will provide huge performance gains in Tiger Lake, and previewed Intel's first Xe-based discrete GPU, code-named "DG1."

Significant updates on Intel's "Project Athena" innovation program, including the first Project Athena-verified Chromebooks: Project Athena-verified designs have been tuned, tested and verified to deliver fantastic system-level innovation and benefits spanning battery life, consistent responsiveness, instant wake, application compatibility and more. Intel has verified 25 Project Athena designs to date, and Bryant announced an expanded partnership with Google that has already resulted in the first two Project Athena-verified Chromebooks, the ASUS Chromebook Flip (C436) and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook. Intel expects to verify approximately 50 more designs across Windows and Chrome this year and deliver a target specification for dual-screen PCs.

Form factor innovation, including dual screens and a revolutionary foldable design: Through deepened co-engineering efforts with OEM partners, Intel helps deliver category-defining devices based on Intel Core processors. This includes new dual-screen and foldable designs like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, which leverages the Intel Core processor with Intel Hybrid Technology (code-named "Lakefield") expected to ship midyear, and the Dell Concept Duet. Bryant also previewed Intel's latest concept device, a foldable OLED display form factor, code-named "Horseshoe Bend." Based on Intel's upcoming Tiger Lake mobile processors, the design is similar in size to a 12-inch laptop with a folding touchscreen display that can be opened up to more than 17 inches.

Intelligence-Driven Business Transformation

The data center is the force that delivers intelligence to businesses around the world and Intel Xeon Scalable processors continue to be the foundation of the data center. Intel Executive Vice President Navin Shenoy announced that 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, coming in the first half of 2020, will include new Intel® DL Boost extensions for built-in AI training acceleration, providing up to a 60% increase in training performance over the previous family.

Shenoy highlighted several ways Intel is threading intelligence into data platforms across cloud, network and edge and how this is transforming sports and entertainment:

Netflix optimizes and accelerates media streaming services: Netflix has utilized the latest video compression technology, AV1, to enhance Netflix’s media streaming services and bring content to life across the globe, with up to 60% compression efficiency over the previous compression technology (AVC). Intel's and Netflix's joint efforts continue with the development of an open-source high-performance encoder (SVT-AV1), optimized on 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, that delivers significant quality and performance gains making it viable for commercial deployment.

Enhanced athlete and viewer experiences at Tokyo 2020 with 3D Athlete Tracking: A first-of-its-kind computer vision solution, 3D Athlete Tracking (3DAT) uses AI to enhance the viewing experience with near real-time insights and visualizations. 3DAT uses highly mobile cameras to capture the form and motion of athletes, then applies algorithms optimized with Intel DL Boost and powered by Intel Xeon Scalable processors to analyze the biomechanics of athletes™ movements. Shenoy announced that this technology will enhance replays of the 100-meter and other sprinting events at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Large-scale volumetric video streaming: Intel and the sports industry are transforming the sports viewing experience with volumetric video, an important progression toward enabling sports viewing without limitations. Intel® True View synthesizes the entire volume of the stadiums™ field to provide endless angles that allow fans to choose any vantage point and player perspective and stream from their devices. Intel and the NFL showcased the power of streaming volumetric video with a play from Week 15's Cleveland Browns-Arizona Cardinals game. The data produced from the first quarter of an NFL game alone reaches beyond 3TB per minute - an exponential increase requiring tremendous computing power.
