    Information Closed captions let you read the words spoken in the audio portion of a video, TV show, or movie.

    This tutorial will show you how to customize how closed captions appear in Windows 10 and some Windows apps for your account.

    CONTENTS:
    • Option One: Change Closed Caption Settings in Settings
    • Option Two: Change Closed Caption Settings in Registry Editor




    OPTION ONE [/i] Change Closed Caption Settings in Settings
    1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Ease of Access icon.

    2. Click/tap on Closed captions on the left side, and change the caption font, caption background, and dim window content settings to what you want. (see screenshots below)

    3. When finished, you can close Settings if you like.

    OPTION TWO [/i] Change Closed Caption Settings in Registry Editor
    1. Press the Win+R keys to open Run, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

    2. Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)
    *Arrow HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ClosedCaptioning

    3. Do the steps below for which closed caption settings you want to change. When finished making changes, go to step 13 below.

    4. Change Caption Color
    A) In the right pane of the ClosedCaptioning key, double click/tap on the CaptionColor DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot below step 2)

    B) Type the value data from the table below for what you want, click/tap on OK, and go to step 3. (see screenshot below)

    A) In the right pane of the ClosedCaptioning key, double click/tap on the CaptionOpacity DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot below step 2)

    A) In the right pane of the ClosedCaptioning key, double click/tap on the CaptionFontStyle DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot below step 2)

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.

    I see that you are not able to find closed captions in Windows 10.

    Please follow the steps and check if it helps.



    1. Go to Settings by typing settings in the Search menu.

    2. Select Ease of Access as subcategory.

    3. There you will find Closed Caption .Click on the Closed Caption
    and on the right side you will see a list of settings each configurable via a separate drop down menu.

    4. The settings are divided into subsections namely Font and Background
    and Window. Here changes made affect the captions as well as background where they are displayed in player.

    Also try the following steps and check if it works for you.

    • You may try the steps to turn on subtitling in a video application.

    • Open the Video app.( Movies & TV app and VLC)

    • Right-click on the video you want to play.

    • Select Playback options

    • If closed caption is not available, you will see Not available.

    How do I turn off the closed captioning? I only see ways to change the display of the captions but not a way to turn them off in the settings on my laptop.

    To turn on closed captioning:

    On a Windows 10 PC that’s playing a video, right-click or tap-and-hold anywhere on the video. A menu bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. If closed captioning is available, a CC icon will be displayed.

    Tap or click the CC icon.

    Tap or click the language you want to see closed captions in. Closed captioning will now appear on your screen.

    Note If closed captioning is not available for the video, a pop-up window will display “Not available.”
