Option 4 via registry (to change full computer name as well):

  2. Mine certainly isn't! That is on the fresh VM install I just attended to where I will have to restart after the updates I just checked for go on and prompt for that anyways! *Biggrin

Previously with the 64bit Technical Previews it wouldn't even connect to the update service. The program saw the latest version however come on on 6/15 a little over a month before 10 launched for some reason? Now the 10 RTM cnnects without issues and yet there's never been a need to edit the registry at all to change the name of the PC here at any time even on a VM.

  4. Change Computer Name in Windows 10

Well one thing proved to be a good laugh earlier! While taking screens of the new version running on a VM using the latest version of VM Player where I also grabbed one for seeing the name change done on 10 as it is on the previous versions suddenly one of the screens became the new wallpaper for 7! You have to see it to believe it! *Roflmao2

First we have the change of the pc name to the obvious with 10 on the VM and finally the 64bit 10 is connecting to the web on the latest VMPlayer out. I had been trying to get the 32bit on but no go and finally the 64bit VM took off. But when you see two screens suddenly become one?

The interesting thing about this is that VM Player wasn't even running when the screen capture made with the snipping tool in 7 caught this displayed on two monitors normally and then after a brief gaming session with a classic oldie this was seen??? *Biggrin

    Good evening everyone,

First excuse me formy English because I am French.

During a Windows installation10 he was awarded a too complicated computername. Like "AbkQ1526SD"

So after a few daysI has changed my computername following the indicatedmethod.

It's ok anywhere on the computer and communicates well with others who are on the same network.

However and it is important : Onedrive.comdoes not change the name under PC.

Seeing dragged the old name Iremoved from onedrive. Woe to me because onedriveno longer works on the computer wherethe name changed.
He merely said to me that my computer has been removed from onedrive

It cost me a completereinstallation of my 4 computers park.
I donot know if it was corrected but be careful anyway.

No worries. At least a clean install would also usually iron out any other bugs you may of had.

  9. That's an understatement! Yet the upgrade on the 7 Pro machine is doing well so far on a drive that is older then those in the main case! I previously ran Vista on the drive now seeing both a clean install of 10 that had been dual booting with 7 until the upgrade there. I might even toss a temp install of 7 Home Premium to see a 10Home upgrade/10Pro clean install dual boot and end up renaming the pc one more time! *Biggrin

Is renaming a computer cap and lower case sensitive? For instance, Is "BRINK-PC" the same computer name as "Brink-PC"?

  12. I label my drives here as well as the PC name for each version having a 10/7 dual boot going. The default user name/number you see when first setting Windows up is automatically generated by the Windows installer and can always be changed easy enough.

The name can be all Upper, all Lower, or a mix up of both and even include numbers. Dashes, @ symbol is typically seen at times, and Underscores are seen while a few of the other symbols won't work there. Sometime I will have to get around to making up a list of the Dos and Won'ts.

I hope it's helpful to mention that with build 10586.17, unless a drive is ALL CAPS, a network may not see it. That, plus making sure the service function discovery resource publication is set to automatic solved that problem for me. Nevertheless, if you use lowercase to name a drive and it disappears from your network, try recasting the name in ALL CAPS to get it to reappear.

  14. What is actually the maximal length for a Windows 10 computer name?

(I read that there are two limits according to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/909264
But Win10 let me enter a much longer name then 15 characters).

  15. 15? At least my Windows does not let me use more than 15 characters.
