Windows 10: Change default display HDMI port to HDMI2 without logging in.

I am having a weird issue. I have an Acer S231HL monitor, which has 2 HDMI ports. I accidentaly twisted the pin on it's primary HDMI port and it's now damaged. Luckily, since the monitor has 2 HDMI ports, I am able to use it, but it's only working for Linux. I am not able to boot into windows, windows still tries to probe the default HDMI port.

Since I cannot access windows, as it just shows cable not connected, I am not able to do any sort of troubleshooting.

There is a plus side here, I have access to windows hard-drive from Linux, and I can make changes to a file.


Now, My question is, how can I change/inform windows 10 to start using secondary HDMI port. :- The switch is not happening dynamically. :-


I cannot go for a second monitor right now. I am looking into a VGA adapter, female HDMI to male VGA, since my graphics card doesn't have VGA, but monitor does. Any help would be nice.

Do you have the latest drivers installed for the graphics card?

If new drivers or reloading graphics card drivers doesn't fix it, the next thing I would suggest is to try the display port to HDMI adapter a couple of us have suggested already with a regular HDMI cable. If your cable is bad or you just need an adapter because for some reason a straight cable won't work - spending $20 on the adapter is a lot cheaper than new graphics card. I just installed my GTX 970 card a week ago and I had plenty of HDMI cables so that is why I went with the adapter instead of buying a new display port to hdmi cable.

Just purchased a new Dell XPS 8920 with Windows 10 that has both a Display port and HDMI port. My new monitor has the HDMI port and my older smaller monitor uses the computers Display port with a conversion cable to DVI on the monitor. How can I swap
monitor 1 (older) with monitor 2 (newer)? Windows lets me move the screens right and left but not swap primary #1 and secondary #2. Thanks for any suggestions; Capt. Brigg

The answer to your question is "yes" I want monitor 2 as the "primary" monitor. While after following the suggested steps and rebooting, it initially appears that the screens have switched. However, the display tab window still shows the older monitor as
#1 and when I click the "identify" button the black number squares seem to verify that the older monitor connected to the "display port" is still #1. Since on reboot the HDMI port monitor came up first for my windows 10 log in, I have to assume it is now the
"primary" monitor, contrary to the visual information in the display tab window. Very confusing as I ASSUMED (you know what that does) that "display #1" and "primary" meant the same thing.

Thanks for your information and do I just ignore the contrary display information? Could this have something to do with a BIOS setting in the Dell tower? Capt. Brigg
