Change folder icon - maybe through regedit (Dropbox icon)

    Hello! *Smile

I have just setup my new laptop with Windows 10 Home and installed Dropbox. I noticed that the Dropbox folder icon is offset compared to other icons. The folder part of the icon is more towards the top than all other folder icons. See this image:
Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

I know it seems like a small issue, but once I saw this, I can't unsee it, and it annoys the heck out of me *Smile

So - I designed a new icon. It is basically the same, but with the position fixed and the Dropbox-logo is a flat design. If anyone is interested, you can grab it here:
    Dropbox - dropbox-fixed.ico

It looks perfect when changed - BUT, once you restart the computer, the Dropbox folder icon reverts back to the default. I tried it several times.

So I was wondering if it is possible to change the icon elsewhere. Maybe in the regedit somewhere. I don't know enough about that stuff to mess with it.

    Hope someone can help! *Smile

    Thanks.

    :)

This PC system folders nested - irreversible (Windows 10)

I was moving system folders from their original location (C:\Users\username) to folders I created on D drive, everytime choosing to move the files inside along with the folder. At last I moved the Desktop folder to D:\Documents\Desktop, and suddenly all
the files from the Documents folder appeared on the desktop. Now my ThisPC list has four folders named Documents but the icons are still different (Documents icon, Music icon, Videos icon and Pictures icon). Everything I put in any of these folders also appears
    on the desktop.

If I try to move any of this folder to its default location, I see the Documents icon at the top of the Location window and clicking the default location button gives back this path: C:\Users\username\Documents.

Is there any way to restore system folder names and corresponding folder locations? Maybe through regedit?

Clean Windows 10 Install and Grey X Icons

OMG - You rock. Deleting all the DropBox reg items as suggested fixed the issue. Interesting that I had dropbox prior and didn't have issues. Now DropBox tells me i need to reinstall to "fix" icon issues, but it still syncs the one folder I have it doing
and I could care less about dropbox icons.

    Thanks a million!

I don't use Dropbox... but I'll give it a go...

Have you tried a desktop.ini file?

This link's instructions are for WinXP, but still valid for Win10:
How to Customize Folders with Desktop.ini (Windows)

If that works, I recommend setting it as a hidden file.

If it doesn't work, it's probably Dropbox's shell folder configuration... and fixing that will require registry editing, and may still be reset if Dropbox resets it on a restart. It might be possible to edit the shell folder parameters, and then reset the registry key's permissions so it cannot be modified... but I wouldn't recommend doing that. There's the possibility that it'd muck up a Dropbox update in the future.

I got it working by editing the desktop.ini file in the Dropbox folder, then setting the desktop.ini file to Read only.

    Thank you! *Smile

Damn! It didn't work in the long run.

Today when I turned on my laptop, guess what - the default icon is back *Mad

The desktop.ini file has been overwritten to the old one. How is that even possible when I set it to "Read only"?

That depends... was it set to "read only" using the old MS-DOS file attribute, or with an ACL?

The ACL method should work, if you set Everyone to Read-Only. (file Properties > Security > Advanced > set Everyone to Read-Only and remove all other permissions.) Beware of issues down the road if you update or remove Dropbox.
