Change May Be Coming to Windows Update

With the version 2004 update that I won't install until the Fall, Microsoft is changing the mechanism for deferring new feature updates for Windows Update for Business customers.

Windows Update for Business is a free service available for Professional, Enterprise and Workstation editions of Windows 10. It enables IT administrators to update Windows 10 devices within their organizations by connecting them directly to Windows Update.

Currently, Windows Update for Business customers can defer new feature updates for up to 365 days, just as consumers with the Professional edition of Windows 10 are able to do unless the current feature update is nearing end of support. ZDNet is reporting that this will change commencing with the v.2004 feature update.

Perennially-reliable Mary Jo Foley cut through the thick Microsoft-ese in Windows 10 2004 for IT Pros documentation published on June 23 to explain what's going on.

The jist of it seems to be that Microsoft is unhappy that some Windows Update for Business customers are only updating their Windows 10 devices once a year. Going forward, they will not have the ability to defer feature updatesat all through the Settings app. Instead, they'll have to rely on IT administrators to do this through local security policy.

None of this affects anybody posting in this forum, but you have to wonder whether Microsoft is dropping hints for how consumers may be treated in future.

    :)
