Change Snipping Tool save location on Windows 11 but not Screenshots

There have been many discussions about changing the default location of Saves in the Snipping Tool but they all apply to Screenshots, too. I like that if I do a screenshot Windows+PrintScrn it goes into the Screenshots folder. However, I use the Snipping Tool often to capture parts of the screen and when I click Save disk icon, it always defaults to the Screenshots folder as well. I prefer to save them either to the desktop or another pre-defined folder. Some have said if you change the location of your Save, it will then default to that folder from then on but it does not. So, is the

Windows 11 Snipping Tool retain previous save folder

Hi Chuck, I am , a fellow Microsoft user like you.

I understand your frustration with the new Snipping Tool in Windows 11. Unfortunately, there is no option to retain the previous save folder for the Snipping Tool in Windows 11 as of now. You can send feedback to Microsoft using the feedback hub just press Windows + F keys.

The Snipping Tool will automatically save your screenshots to the Screenshots folder in the Pictures folder by default1. You can change the location of the Screenshots folder, but that will affect all the screenshots taken by other apps as well. You can check steps outlined here: https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/change-screenshot...

Another potential workaround could be to revert to the old Snipping Tool from Windows 10, which still has the functionality you're looking for: https://windowsreport.com/old-snipping-tool-win...

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

  3. Cannot screenshot with Snipping Tool

Thanks for replying! I've done everything you suggested, but the issue still persists. To make it easier to troubleshoot, I've listed all the things I've tried so far.

    System Model: OMEN Laptop 15-ek1xxx

Symptom: The Snipping Tool app opens as expected but when trying to take a screenshot by clicking on "New" inside the app or using its shortcuts (PrtSc or Windows + Shift + S), the cursor briefly changes to buffer and the app minimizes, but nothing happens.

    Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

    • Terminated Snipping Tool
    • Repaired Snipping Tool
    • Reset Snipping Tool
    • Updated Windows and drivers
    • Set time automatically
    • Set time to October 30/31, 2021
    • Enabled/disabled settings inside Snipping Tool
    • Enabled delay and fullscreen options inside Snipping Tool
    • Enabled notifications and priority notifications for Snipping Tool
    • Changed Snipping Tool to run "Always" as a background app
    • Enabled Clipboard History
    • Enabled "use PrtSc to use Snipping Tool"
    • Clicked on "New" inside Snipping Tool
    • Used the PrtSc key and Windows + Shift + S shortcut
    • Checked that the keyboard hardware is up to date and not faulty
    • Pinned Snipping Tool to the taskbar
    Advanced Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Disabled "Do not allow Snipping Tool to run" in gpedit (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Tablet PC > Accessories)
    • Created the "DisableSnippingTool" key in registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\TabletPC) and set it to 0
    • Created the "EnableSnippingTool" key in registry (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\SnippingTool) and set it to 1
    • Ran sfc/scannow
    • Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Restarted Windows Explorer
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled Snipping Tool via PowerShell/cmd
    • Perfomed a Clean Boot
    • Created a new user profile
    What I have not tried:

    • Enabled App Permissions Picture on Snipping Tool (the option does not show on advanced options)
    • Ran the Windows 11 Snipping Tool Directly from the "Windows.old" folder (I do not have Windows.old folder)
    • Reset Windows

Change Snipping Tool save location on Windows 11 but not Screenshots

Snipping tool closes after Saving. Where is it saved and how can I change the location where it is saved?

When I try to click the save icon on Windows 11 Snipping tool it does not function as a Save As. It closes afterwards with the Screenshot lost and I can't find it. Where is it saved and how can I change the location where it is saved?
