    Changed drive letter on EFI partition, and now it's gone


    So, yesterday I decided to try and Dual-Boot windows with a Linux Distro. I couldn't get the installer USB to work because I was using the installer version instead of a Live version. I formatted the USB in Windows to try and install the new distribution, and restarted my device for some reason... It told me that windows was unable to boot, and I figured it was because the Linux distro was missing. I went into Bios and reset my load order so that Windows Boot Manager was first instead of the USB. Well, windows still wouldn't boot, so I tried using BCD to fix it. Well, I assigned a drive letter

    In Macrium Reflect (free), a Dell Optiplex 3046 running 6.3.1835 on Win 10 64 Pro, returns a
    when performing a backup that includes the EFI system partition. Macrium's suggested solution is to assign a drive letter to that partition. The EFI partition is required for a disk image.

    Before I assign a drive letter I'd like to understand what risks there are in the assignment.

    Regarding Option 1:

    The steps need to be run from WinRE. Please take extra care when selecting the volume number. Use list volume to verify the volume numbers. Target the 523 MB EFI partition and convert it to a standard data partition.

    And when running the bcdboot command, use the correct drive letters. The OS partition's drive-letter may not necessarily be C: . Check the output of list volume to find the drive letter of the OS partition (1862.39 GB).

    Let's know how it went.

    After completing the EFI stuff, one of us shall post the instructions to configure the Recovery partition.

    Drive letter for EFI system partition?

    The only risk is that it will give the user and programs access to the EFI System Partition through the drive letter to make changes. I doubt that assigning a drive letter will fix the issue because we do backups all the time with no drive letter assigned to the EFI System Partition, but you can try, and just remove the drive letter after the backup is done.

    The good news is that it is extremely easy to rebuild the EFI System Partition.
