  2. Windows 10 Desktop Shortcuts' Colors

    Hi there,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have better clarity on the issue, provide us the operating system that is installed on your PC?

If you want to change the color of a desktops shortcut font (text), then follow the below steps.

Step 1: Right click on an empty space on the desktop and click on 'Personalize'.

Step 2: It gives you the choice between Picture, Solid, or Slideshow under
Background, choose 'Solid' under drop-down list.

Step 3: Set the color to Orange and this will make the shortcut icon text Black.

Step 4: After the above steps, you can set your background image as your choice and the icon font will remain black.

NOTE: You can only change the font color to either White or Black.

    Hope it helps.

how to change icon fonts on desktop

Do you mean change the actual font or the size of the font?

If you mean change the Font:

The font used by Windows is universal throughout Windows - Segue UI

To change that font (please note this change will change the font everywhere in Windows (menus, window headings . . . etc.)) :

    • Make sure you can see file extensions, in Windows File Explorer, on the View Ribbon, check the box marked 'File Name Extensions, then close Windows File Explorer
    • On your desktop, right click an empty part and choose 'New' - Text Document
    • Copy the text below into the new text file (replace NEWFONTNAME with the name of the font you want)
    • Save the file as ReplaceFont.reg - make sure it has a .reg file extension instead of the default .txt
    • Right click the file and choose 'Merge' confirm the merge
    • Restart your System

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]

    "Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

    "Segoe UI"="NEWFONTNAME"

If you mean change the Font Size:

This option was removed in the Creators Edition of Windows 10, look for a small free utility available online called Winaero Tweaker

  4. Changed the system font by editing the file registry. Now the text on my desktop shortcuts...

Why does the registry need to be edited to add a Homegroup Icon to the desktop?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community. Let me assist you.

Provide us with the below details for better clarity on the issue.

    • Did you try to create the shortcut on the desktop?
    • What happens when you try to create the shortcut?

If you are referring to create a shortcut on the desktop then please follow the steps given here to create the short cut of Home group on your desktop.

    • Press Windows Key + X and select
      Control Panel
      .
    • Go to Network and Internet.
    • Right Click on Home group and select Pin to Start.
    • Close the window and Click on Start icon.
    • Click, Drag and Drop the Home group icon to an empty desktop area.
    • Home group desktop shortcut is now created.

If the add a Home group Icon to the desktop does not work while trying the normal steps then you can go with the registry editor steps. The registry editor step is not the only step for adding a Home group Icon to the desktop.

Please avoid using Registry editor until it’s really necessary. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. For added protection, always back up the registry before you modify it.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
