  1. Changing Default Network Connection Order to Whichever is Fastest

Hi, On a Windows 11 PC, is it possible to change the default network selection order to always prioritize whichever connected network is fast, When connected to both ethernet and Wi-Fi, I understand that by default, Windows defaults to using the ethernet connection with Wi-Fi as a a second priority fallback. I understand that this can be manually changed by following the instructions posted here, but it seems that it's only possible to change weather Windows always defaults to ethernet or always defaults to Wi-Fi. However, is it possible for the default settings to utilize whichever network co

Change Wireless Network Connection Priority Order in Windows 10

Hello Denis, Changing Default Network Connection Order to Whichever is Fastest :)

The command in step 2 of Option Two should show your wireless networks listed in priority order. Top of the list is higher.

Changing the Display Order of Network Connections

This is going to sound very petty and unimportant, but it's niggling me, as I have found something annoying in Windows 10's display of network components.

I have two Ethernet ports on my motherboard, the first of which is connected to my router, the second to my netbook, to allow me to transfer files between the machines as fast as possible.

It all works fine, but when I go to the Network and Internet settings in Windows, and select Ethernet, the two connections are both shown, but the wrong way around, with the netbook connection listed first and the modem connection second. They are also shown that way around in the performance tab of the Windows Task Manager.
If I go and look at the data usage, again the netbook connection appears as "Ethernet" and the modem connection appears as "Ethernet2", so it doesn't appear as the default as I want it to!

Why this should be I don't understand. The modem is definitely connected to Ethernet port 1 in Device Manager, and the netbook to Ethernet port 2, so why they appear the other way around in the settings is a bit of a mystery to me. Of course I could just reverse the connections, but I have a multi-boot machine, and this will mess up the order elsewhere.

Is there any way of changing this? I could understand if they were in alphabetical order of the connection name say, but I've tried that and re-naming them makes no difference.

    Cheers, Dave.

Change Wireless Network Connection Priority Order in Windows 10

    Shawn,

Do you know how to use netsh to retrieve the priority setting in order to check it?

    • I am seeing strange behaviour and want to find out what is going on.
    • I have played around with netsh wlan a lot but cannot find any method for getting WiFi network priority out of the profile.
    • My previous method of showing relative priorities does not show any change so it does not seem to be valid any more - the command netsh wlan show profiles used to list profiles in their priority order but it currently shows the expected sequence even though the wrong network has been chosen.

Earlier today, two computers connected to the lower priority network even though there did not seem to be any interruption to the higher priority one. Furthermore, they did not switch back automatically even though the lower priority network also has the look for other networks whilst connected to this one ["AutoSwitch"]setting checked [the main network does not have this setting].
