Windows 10: Changing Folder Icons In Windows 10

So as many people may agree, the icons in Windows 10 look absolutely hideous.

I have found an Icon pack I would like to use & I have successfully changed Icons such as Recycle Bin, My PC, My Network but when it comes to the Documents, Movies, Pictures, Download folders they simply won't change.

Is there something that needs to be done in addition other than right clicking the folder I wish to change - customise - choose file 'select icon'

I had a similar issue in W8.1 but was able to correct it in the control panel. Now I'm experiencing

an issue when I view a folder and change the view from list to large icons, close the folder and come back to it at another time and the view has switched back to list. What can I do to keep the folders (all folders) in large icon view? It's probably a setting
I'm missing somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

I ran the cfs and it turned up a couple corrupted files but I'm uncomfortable proceeding further. I will contact support.

Also, will this repair any corrupted files on a second hard drive? I have a D: drive and that's where the large icons keep changing back to lists.

This is my first post, actually I was looking for a solution to a different problem, and stumbled on your question,
and it's one I might be able to help you out with.
I used a small free program called "PC Tweaker" when Windows 8 first hit the scene, to change the folders.
Apparently you can't change the icons/folders for the Documents, Movies, Pictures, and Download folders, I can't remember why, but this software fixes that. It worked fine on Win8, 8.1, but I haven't tried it yet on Win10, but it should work fine.

Half the people are here to promote "their software", dont trust the eager. To customize desktop icons like Recycle Bin navigate to > Peronalization > scroll down to Themes and click Desktop Icons. Be sure to uncheck "Allow themes to change desktop icons". When it comes to the folder icons in the "This PC" folder, I ignore them, mostly because I open file explorer to Libraries. The Library folder Icons are easier to change and the whole Library is easier to manage. Also, I hate how Quick access works and intend to disable it soon as I can.

If you are confident and skilled with editing the registry. This tutorial will help you delete those folders, or you can do some editing and the default icon in the "DefaultIcon" key. Just change the value with the location of your icon, ex. "D:\Icons\Icon0001.ico". I keep a few thousand icons in one folders on a spare HDD so they are easy to find and sort through

 

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I copied the file "imageres.dll" from the folder c:\Windows.old\Windows\System32, RENAMED the copy of that file to "imageres-7.dll" and then PASTED it into c:\Windows\System32. Then I used the FREE program Personalization Panel for Windows 10 (you can download it at this link: Personalization Panel for Windows 10) to CHANGE the desktop icons to the oldstyle Windows 7 icons in the file "imageres-7.dll". Now I have the nice Windows 7 icons on my Windows 10 desktop, and have BANISHED the flat ugly Windows 10 icons.

If you just want to change the icons in Windows 10's personalization app, you can't; that option is not there. You'll NEED the FREE Personalization Panel for Windows 10 to do that.

I wish Microsoft did not assume that EVERYONE agrees with what THEY think OUR desktops should look like.

 

I found it quite easy to change the normal desktop icons to Custom Icons in win10. Its a bit harded to change folder icons inside windows file explorer, but still do able. All taskbar icons can be done too. All without downloading risky programs.

Hello! Have a look at my post in this thread. To change the folder icons (and almost everything else) you must modify the file imageres.dll found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. You can replace the default icons with those from Windows 7 or 8 or any custom ones in ICO, JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG format. imageres.dll contains over 100 icons, so to change them all is rather tedious, but it worths the trouble! Alternatively you can just change only the icons for the personal folders and keep the rest as they are. One utility that easily modifies icons from EXE and DLL files is Customizer God. Read my post in this thread for step-by-step guide of how to do it.

 

I'm reluctant to try a utility (Customizer God) that doesn't support Win 10 (as per their website). Can you remember to post to this thread again when it is released? It looks like it does what I want to do in explorer.

 

Don't worry! The utility doesn't support Windows 10 means that it cannot automatically open the necessary DLL files to tweak the icons. You can manually open them with CTRL+O. I have used it with success in both Windows 10 32-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. When you open a DLL file it shows the icons embedded in the file and allows you to replace them with your custom icons. It doesn't affect the rest of the code, so there is no chance damaging the file and making it non-functional. Besides it takes a backup before you do any changes, so you can simply delete the modified file and return to the backup if something goes wrong.

Yes, tried it but doesn't work at all in Windows 10. Use Customizer God instead as I describe in earlier posts. Is the only one that worked.
